pelya,

I am using only one monitor. It’s hard enough to position it to avoid glare from windows and overhead lamps, I cannot imagine doing it with two.

I also have 15 virtual desktops, so there’s that.

pelya,

When you are measuring precise distance to the Moon using lasers, 50 microseconds is about 1.5 kilometers.

pelya,

Ctrl+Shift+K

Clears the text in the current tab and resets the terminal

pelya,

The most cultured anime of the season at the fourth place, yay.

I’m surprised that Solo Leveling did not even get into top 15, on the torrent sites it’s in the second place in popularity, right after Frieren.

pelya,

That explains it. It’s a Korean novel, Japanese are the bad guys, yeah.

pelya,

Choose the distro that can auto-install all the drivers for you, like Mint. It sounds like you will only run Chrome on it anyway.

pelya,

You did not include the scale in the photo.

Radical New Discovery Could Double The Speed of Existing Computers - simultaneous and heterogeneous multithreading (www.msn.com)

Does anyone know more about this? Sounds like distributing tasks to other processors that are not really designed for the job? Articles are making it out to be a miracle and not sure whether to believe it

pelya,

I’ll believe it when I will see Linux ported to the shader language.

pelya,

No Android support eh.

The common comment from dev studios is that premium Android games are not profitable at all.

pelya,

There are some console ports , if you look hard enough.

pelya,
  1. Open Microsoft Store from your Windows 11 Start menu.
  2. Locate Ubuntu.
  3. Install Ubuntu.
  4. Now you have a proper OS. Enjoy!
pelya,

The only reason Windows is still relevant is a massive volume of legacy x86 applications.

If that laptop won’t support x86 emulation, it’d be actually worse that Linux ARM laptop.

pelya,

Windows is not a ‘better’ product, that would be ChromeOS. Zero configuration means nothing can get broken.

The average user who started with MS Office 95 is now 50 years old. The younger average user at least knows there are alternatives to Windows.

PC gaming is a whole other can of worms. I keep hearing that Valve did some black mahic and now most of Steam games work on Linux with no issues.

pelya,

The answer is 256-color (8-bit) palette.

pelya,

It wasn’t an engine limitation, it was a design choice. Heretic is a colorful game, and it was made using Doom engine.

It’s especially bad in Quake, all monsters look like a moving piece of a wall, and the level design is walls on top of walls with some walls in-between. If not for the revolutionary game engine, it would seriously flop.

The truth about linux having 15% market share in India.

I am from india. These numbers are inflated due to our population and government and health sector office pc using linux (ubuntu). These office pcs just require a chrome browser and all the work is done on the browser Nobody here cares what os they use in their office pc. I don’t see anyone here switching to linux on their...

pelya,

Nobody here cares what os they use in their office pc.

Yup, that’s how it’s supposed to be. You turn on your PC to get your office work done, not to reinstall display drivers each day.

Gone are the days when you needed to compile your own modem drivers to access Internet from your Linux PC.

The Linux experts here are using their technical knowledge to perform advanced tasks like setting up server clusters for AI-generated furry porn, they are definitely not the ‘average’ Linux user.

pelya,

Quake engine is infinitely moddable.

Dusk seems to be using it’s own engine based on Unity.

Debian's Dilemma (sh.itjust.works)

[Image description: A fox-woman wearing a dress the color of the Debian logo is being pulled by the sleeves on one side by a gnu man and on the other side bu a penguin. She has an annoyed expression. The gnu man says: “Debian, why do you offer a non-free firmware repo? You’re so close to being one of the few fully free...

pelya,

I would expect some Toy Story character, but it seems that we really only have the pink swirl as a mascot. Thank Lord it does not have the eyes as Clippy does

pelya,

I was a FreeBSD user once, for around three months.

I’ve learned everything about startx command that is known to mankind.

pelya, (edited )

Given that I’ve installed it around 2006 from a CD disk, they’ve fixed a lot of things since then.

It was the time when spending a week to just launch some graphical applications was something to boast about. Some would think people even made it harder on purpose to filter out Windows normies. Thankfully, sanity prevailed, after those same hax0r kids went to high-paying engineering jobs and had to deliver a working product on a fixed deadline. Now you insert your USB drive, press Next - Next - Next - Root password - Reboot, and have your FreeBSD installation working out of the box and ready to use in 20 minutes. Boring!

pelya,

Gentoo brings back that OG build-everything-from-source experience.

pelya,

Your Android phone runs Linux.

Dun dun dun.
