Serious question: Why is it that bicycle commuters in Paris are in super stylish street clothes, whereas the ones in London dress like they're in the Tour de France?

peter,
@peter@thepit.social avatar

@brett @davidho this is the answer. these people don’t have fancy cycling gear because they are normies. you get normies to ride bikes by building a robust and safe cycling network. very few people wearing bike-specific clothing in BCN either.

gave Lucy a crust of bread and she took it to the couch to cry about it. she does this with very precious things. overwhelmed by feelings.

my considered opinion is that e-bikes/scooters give everyone the opportunity to be an asshole. it used to be just fit men in Lycra, which was at least a relatively small group. now every single dickhead with an Li battery thinks they can shoal you and it’ll be fine. no, moron, I don’t have a governor on my machine and now I need to get past you.

i don’t think I agree with this. if the GOP wants to nominate a convicted felon to run for president, let them. the instinct here is “we must protect the sanctity of our institutions” but they’ve already been defiled. what this would really do is put back the fig leaf so journalists could go back to pretending the GOP is a normal party. https://washingtonmonthly.com/2024/05/30/donald-trump-should-drop-out/

peter,

“what if he wins??” I mean, he might, but I don’t think it would be any worse than a President Nikki Haley. the Republican Party is an existential threat to democracy, and that doesn’t change when Trump goes away.

pretty funny watching it dawn on the software community that they are, in fact, labor.

@adriano huh, that's even crazier. i guess they had family money or something? although the whole "build what you love for the love of it" thing probably worked in the early 2000s, but not because the philosophy intrinsically makes sense but because of Moore's law and the subsequent need for more developers to build build build.

i think making software is really fun, but fuck me if I ever contribute to something in my free time with a license that allows capitalists to use it to add to the stinking treasure pile they sleep on every night. imo if they want a new cool database feature or web framework, they should pay someone to make it.

peter,
@peter@thepit.social avatar

@adriano yeah, i came in contact will that whole philosophy of openness when BoingBoing was big and Lawrence Lessig tried to run for president. in retrospect, the whole "make your work open and everyone wins!" was a massive handout to Google et al. as a writer, i'm very well acquainted with the idea that working for exposure is obviously a fool's errand. i guess it wasn't as obvious to software people because there were so many well-paying jobs that you COULD get thru exposure.

peter,
@peter@thepit.social avatar

the thing I would like to know is: why does anyone work on open source software that can be used by for-profit enterprises? this is genuinely a mystery to me. “big business runs on open source” they say proudly, as if making a thing for free so that the richest people in history can horde even more wealth is a satisfying endevour??

peter,
@peter@thepit.social avatar

@hakamadare @adriano @jjoelson that makes a lot of sense that this came partly from academia. that’s another group that’s just getting used to the idea that they are, in fact, labor. the kind of work PhD candidates do for peanuts is wild

you know what’s worse than the Mastodoorks whining is when people like this whine about the Mastodorks whining. these people are addicted to public approval and can’t stand it when some random stranger says “I don’t like what you’re doing”

It’s so weird seeing 90s fashion come back. like, the passive part of my brain sees a kid in baggy jeans and Sambas and a bowling shirt with sideburns and his hair parted down the middle and is like “huh.”

then the thinking part of my brain is like “WAIT WHAT YEAR IS IT????”
