@lgatto The article goes into specific cases and investigations that took place during the last years. Also a report with recommendations was mentioned that was (according to the article) not followed up. As always, individual cases cannot be extrapolated to an institute/university as a whole - I do agree - but I do recognize some of the same mechanisms in my own university.

@lgatto The problem with universities is that they are in reality a loose collection of a bunch (a few 100) of smaller research groups, individual professors, institutes, etc, each operating according to their own principles, traditions etc. There is relatively few centralized oversight. When incidents happen, it can take a long time before these are detected, even longer to act on them.

@lgatto In my various roles at my own university (member of various committees of all sorts ;-)), I’m still amazed by the pettiness and childish behaviour of some professors, to try to bring a colleague down. So when that escalates, we see the sort of cases as described in the article.

@ON8SD Ok, maar dat is vaak niet wat er bedoeld wordt. ‘Chatgpt produceert iets en klaar’, dat is vaak het scenario dat bedoeld wordt.

@PhilippeBoey Ik heb het gisteren op radio1 gehoord. Uiteindelijk gewoon een ‘goed gesprek’, maar vermomd als duivelsuitdrijving. Soit, als mensen daarmee geholpen zijn en er geen oplichterstoestanden rond hangen …

@PhilippeBoey Er zijn ergere vormen van onzin die meer schade aanrichten dan dit. Maar het is misschien wel tekenend, dat dit soort bijgeloof en onwetenschappelijk denken aan het oprukken is.

@brembs The context in every country is of course different, but indeed, this almost dogmatic focus on ‘excellence’ (whatever that means) is destroying the soul and spirit of universities.

@RobertTalbert I always enjoy your posts, and have used them to implement my own ungrading practices for assignments in my various courses. The shift from "correcting and grading" to "giving feedback so students can learn" is not always easy to implement though ;-)

Bovendien wordt het veroordelen van geweld in dat soort discussies nogal snel beperkt tot fysiek geweld. Terwijl er allerhande andere vormen van geweld zijn die meer voorkomen. Financieel geweld bijvoorbeeld, waarbij schaamteloos op kap van de maatschappij geld gestolen wordt door allerhande slimme, "maar wel volledig legale!", praktijken. Of discriminatie, waarbij hele bevolkingsgroepen evenwaardige kansen ontnomen worden. 2/

Dat is uiteraard allemaal geen fysiek geweld, maar wel vaak ontwrichtender voor mensen die aan de verkeerde kant vallen. Uiteraard keuren we met z'n allen fysiek geweld af. Maar enkel fysiek geweld afkeuren is op zich een flink deel van maatschappelijke problemen miskennen. 3/3
