Popular Mechanics isn’t the most high brow publication but their latest article on a “controversial” rehash of steady state theory (proposed long ago by actual astronomers and then dismissed by evidence) is bizarre.

The lawyer-turned-cosmologist’s assertion that there is no experimental evidence for the Doppler shift in light is hilarious.

It’s true that griping that the characters are “diverse” instead of all Chinese doesn’t reflect well on those complaint. But the fact that they’re all college buddies living close to London doesn’t scream diversity either.

On the one hand, it is ridiculous than the DOJ is suing Apple over its “monopoly” but not Amazon (say). OTOH I really want Apple to offer better integration with other companies’ products. Messages, Airplay, etc.

And it will be good for Apple in the long run.

Unfortunately the really important monopoly over the next decade will be Reality OS and that lawsuit will probably be in 2041…

I thought Three Body Problem (the book) was quite good. Not fabulous but good. The TV series is like a slightly better episode of Dr Who but, upon consideration, sillier than Independence Day but with far more death porn.

Dune 2 is a reminder that 1) Dune isn’t as good a book as people think it is, 2) cartoonishly evil villains never make sense, and 3) there is no coherent message to be pulled out of the hot mess of prophecy, psychic powers, eugenics, and religious craziness that it’s built of.

Nice spectacle but a hot mess.

My girlfriend is a big tea drinker so I bought her this Ittala teapot as a gift. Only problem it does not appear to be able to pour hot tea (it dribbles like crazy even if you are very careful).

We tested the hypothesis that the design must have been tested with cold water and this appears to be the case. It only dribbles a bit when pouring cold water.

The second episode of F1: Drive to Survive seems very special to me. It changed my perception of Christian Horner. It’s a portrait of leadership, patience, loyalty, and simple decency.

The punchline version of this is “how does a soft drink company beat Mercedes, Ferrari, and McClaren” at car racing?” Leadership.

Just watched “Anatomy of a Fall” which is excellent (the fight scene on which the entire story pivots is a masterpiece that will lead to an interesting conversation or ten).

I’m surprised it isn’t more commented on that this is kind of a riff on The Staircase the way Gone Girl is on the Lacie Peterson murder.

The ridiculous EU carton cap is more than just annoying. It’s inconvenient, expensive, hard to use, and bad for the planet. For a company professing to care about the planet like Good Morgon it’s just rank hypocrisy. Use an ordinary carton with no plastic spout.

It’s rather strange to me that Masters of the Air gets off to such a shaky start. Really it could have started mid mission and done all the stuff in the first episode in flashbacks (or even outright omitted them).

Band of Brothers started slowly but it did include more detail on training, which seems like it would have been more interesting for bomber crews.

Episode 2 is solid and by episode 3 it finds its feet.

It’s hard to pin down exactly what isn’t wrong with . Now, to be fair, we did walk out on it because it clearly wasn’t going to improve…

I think there might actually be a decent 6/10 movie in there if you whittled out 30 minutes of dross, tightened up action scenes, dropped Henry Caville once the action starts, and reshot every scene with the female lead using an actress with comedic chops.

Ugh.

Personally I was very bullish on VisionPro and I still think it will be transformative but the first release is skippable barring major software improvements.

Because of the secrecy in which it was developed it doesn’t have geo positioning support and XR support is still experimental.

It doesn’t even seem like it’s compelling for porn production :)

So this is the “FireWire iPod” or iPhone 2G pre App Store.

Anyone else getting increasingly annoyed by so-called "smart" TVs?

My new Samsung TV is lovely once it's actually pointing to the content I want, but it (a) doesn't stay pointed at an input source, (b) doesn't have a lick of "common sense" (e.g. prioritize inputs I use a lot), (c) detects but doesn't automatically switch to inputs.

All I want is a TV that takes HDMI inputs and doesn't switch them randomly. It it must have apps, maybe don't randomly rearrange them… constantly?

It’s interesting to me how little most folks even in the Apple ecosystem know about Vision Pro. I mentioned to a developer of Mac 3D software that demand for 3D content creating software on Apple platforms is likely to skyrocket and and he said he didn’t think VR products would go mainstream.

Vision Pro isn’t a VR product.
