A lot of doomsaying here, but a big part of what we’re seeing now is the scientific progress we’ve made to more accurately sequence viruses in the moment. Novel flu variants are not a new thing, influenza has been passing back and forth between animals and mutating for thousands of years and has killed tens of millions of people. 30 or even 15 years ago this case, which is likely to be a one-off, would have gone completely unnoticed. The patient also sounds like they might have struggled to survive any flu variant given their comorbid diagnoses
H5N2 is not a new virus, it’s well known to virologists.
Influenza A virus is classified into subtypes based on the viral proteins haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). As of 2019, 18 H subtypes and 11 N subtypes have been identified. Most potential combinations have been reported in birds, but H17-18 and N10-11 have only been found in bats. Only H subtypes H1-3 and N subtypes N1-2 are known to have circulated in humans
Didn’t Square Enix just announce they’re not doing PS exclusives anymore and will be releasing all their games on Xbox too? Seems like the movement is coming from both directions. Next generation consoles are still years away, regardless
Back then in addition to all those things, they supported a liberal economic policy. George Wallace l, for example, supported the New Deal through and through, and progressive tax policies
I’ve carved up my lawn to plant trees and native plants beds, but still have sections that are grass. It’s a great play space for the kids, and with the trees there’s enough shade to really limit the amount of irrigation necessary during the worst of the summer. Point is, lawns aren’t inherently bad, their extent and how you manage them are what matter most.

2: Artificial lighting will confuse lightning bugs or prevent them from mating, since females need to see that fancy swoopy-light dance to find a mate. When they don’t mate, you lose out on the next generation.
3: I’ve had success in my yard because I’ve carved garden beds out in my lawn where I’ve planted a lot of different native plants, and I try to only minimally disturb the beds throughout the year, so lightning bug larvae have free reign in the leaf litter in fall and winter
