Writing a bit of Go today and once again getting bitten by the fact that the strings package includes most of what I want but not reverse.

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@drj Yeah, there are some nasty edge cases. In this case I don't care as the input will be ASCII (I want to convert a number to a string, then compare that to its reversal to see if it's a palindrome). In the end I checked each digit from start/end, moving towards the middle.

@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@appliedgo Thanks, I'll give that a try then (still surprised that there's no reverse function in the strings class though, seems like a glaring omission).

@dick_turpin LTV is just the percentage of the property value that is covered by a mortgage, e.g. property is valued at £100, mortgage is £60, LTV is 60%. What Labour are proposing is to insure banks against the loss if a borrower defaults and the property sale doesn't cover the mortgage balance.

Can anyone recommend a good UK politics podcast that’s not The Rest Is Politics? 😫

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@katiefenn I listen to Politics Weekly (The Guardian) and Political Fix (FT, was called Payne's Politics before the lead presenter left).

Hmmm tui email clients or ? I'm kind of leaning to the latter I think ? 🤔

*No I'm not needing any wizards to install / setup. I actually like causing myself pain and learning how things work 😂 *

@JustineSmithies I really like Neomutt, it’s my main client for personal email (I would use it for business too, but I have to support HTML email and Teams invites…)

This Guardian ranking of Doctor Who outfits is entertaining but also SO WRONG.

One of the better things I've done in the past year for work/life balance is setting my phone to auto-off my work profile after working hours. It's amazing how much pressure/anxiety those count notifications would cause if I wasn't reading them.

I do have Pager Duty outside of my work profile if there is an actual emergency - no escaping that in my current job.

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@andrewmriley I've done the same - even one step further by having a separate phone for work so it's totally switched off. Made a huge difference.

(I don't do emergency work)

My domain provider (123-reg) is screwing up its service so I need a new one 😭 I need:

  • email forwarding (no mailbox required)
  • catch-all email forwarding
  • DNS control (A records)
  • UK or Europe-based

Fasthosts.co.uk look promising, anyone used them?

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@teapot_ben @Edith @beasts +1 for Mythic, also used them for many years. They have a comprehensive DNS control panel where you can change pretty much everything, including things like ANAME records which not all providers support.

Is there a good Mastodon client for iOS that is equivalent to Tusky?

@XerShadowTail I am using Tooot which is pretty close.

    @cliffwade Don’t think I’ve ever tried Ahi / yellowfin, though I do like tuna. I think we get a different species over here in the UK.

    I find this rather odd, and I cannot work out what law Twitter is abiding by, especially in the UK jurisdiction, withholding RT's twitter account from view.

    I thought the only stuff mandated was DNS related?

    Seen on twitter:

    This upcoming weekend we're recording another Silver Screen podcast and Mike & DK are finally welcoming back Will Templar! But we had one condition. He had never seen The Terminator so we had to make him watch it. But what do YOU think of James Cameron's 1984 classic cyberpunk, neo-noir, sci-fi slasher? Best of the franchise? Best Cameron movie? Historical? What about the performances? The effects? The story? As always leave any thoughts for us and we'll shout you out on the podcast because, as you know, we'll be back.

    pwaring,
    @pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ironmikewilson I watched 1+2 for the first time recently for a film club. Terminator is a good action film but I don't think it would be particularly special if it wasn't the first of the series. Story is okay, performances are good but not amazing. It does launch Cameron's and Schwarzenegger's careers though and is notable for that.

    I much preferred Terminator 2 - it feels more sci-fi and has better performances, effects etc.

    Not that we were planning on going anytime soon anyway, but Sandra and I were chatting about holidays and felt that the uncontrolled gun culture and rampant radical "Christianity" seeking to erase gay and trans people in the USA means America is off the list for now.

    We have had some lovely holidays there, and we would love to ride the Amtrak from coast to coast, but daily reports of mass shootings and vile policies don't make it attractive currently.

    (Edit: not just pro-gun policy.)

    pwaring,
    @pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

    @neil I’d quite like to visit the US as well but am put off for similar reasons, plus the environmental impact of flying there. But I haven’t explored a even 10% of what the UK has to offer so I’m not sure if going abroad is actually necessary.

    Really interesting talk from @penguin42 at the Manchester Linux Users Group today about retrieving teletext from VCR tapes. I didn't know that teletext was broadcast during gaps and that VCRs captured them.
