I am not implementing undo in my prototype painting app because it's a fun creative constraint and 'challenges you to think about it like physical media' and definitely not because I have no idea how to implement an undo stack for raster graphics

The thing the Unity Incident has highlighted for me is confirmation of the kind of brainrot @neauoire talks about: people are learning the tool, not the craft. I see people all over talking about how they can't just switch because they know Unity (ongoing/in-dev projects aside, of course).
"Game design" is a skill. Unity is not a skill, it's a tool. The ability to carry a skill to another tool is something that modern software companies are actively trying to stop you doing. Do not let them.

@troublewithwords my university’s animation course was Maya or gtfo; I chose the latter. Its sister gamedev course was Unity or nothing. No time was spent on the craft, it was all technical, the kind of stuff you can learn in a week or two between jobs.

@Miredly @neauoire something that's really interesting when you build your own engines (from scratch, in SDL, etc.) is that you learn that the engine is actually the smallest part of your game. I've had "the moment" and thrown out an entire codebase, and each time it's taken like a week to get it back to the same state of functionality. Because the engine, when it's yours, is just the thinnest possible "emulation layer" that loads your assets and dialogue trees; the smallest part of the project.

Here's a little sneak peek for what would have been Apollo for iPad. You have stackable panes allowing you to easily view and move through multiple things at once (or go full screen!), Gallery Mode, and sections are moved to the side, with support for opening new tabs

@christianselig such a missed opportunity, it looks fantastic. That said, an e-reader with those lovely weighted page-turns would be fantastic.
