Working with data physicalization is a wonderful challenge. I prompted my Northeastern CAMD Physical Computing students to create prototype digital data sculptures. They showed housing data, rat populations , dates of wine harvest, and migrant populations; using Arduino, motors, sensors, LED strips & more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef6v-B3qeWs

Can journalists create compelling experiences out of their data stories? My Data Storytelling students created and filmed short participatory IRL data sculptures. Wonderful prototypes about graduation rates, dining costs, financial literacy, & expected incomes. 📊+📹+👨‍👩‍👧‍👦=🤔💡

My colleague and mentor @ethanz is suing Meta, making the novel and compelling case that part of Section 230 allows us to install "middleware" tech that changes our feeds (with @knightcolumbia). Important case to follow if you care about the future of social media and the internet 🤞🏽. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/05/opinion/facebook-court-internet-meta.html

Computation social science Q: what do you find is the best research option for a contemporary dataset quantifying partisanship of US online news media sources? Our internal Media Cloud options used social-sharing-based metrics we can no longer replicate so they're dated. Thx for any recommendations.

@janeadams I appreciate those pointers. Both look built around aggregating articles scores from reader panels. Do you see these holding up and being useful in your research? Also hard to tell if they allow source score data download (for a fee?).

I study the news with computers. Critical to remember where my methods came from. Read Ellen Gruber Garvey on the "Abolitionists' Database Innovations" to learn about how the Grimké-Welds built a corpus of more than 20k newspapers, extracted ads about recovering escaped slaves, anonymized the data, categorized content, connected related interviews, and published over 100k copies of their 200+ page investigative data report. In 1839(!). https://direct.mit.edu/books/edited-volume/3992/chapter-abstract/166420/facts-and-FACTS-Abolitionists-Database-Innovations

Is there a group that tracks white supremacist (wanna-be Nazi) public events like marches, etc.? SPLC has an authoritative list of groups, but I don't see a dataset about public demonstrations. Thx for any links or pointers.

Weekend joy: serendipity led me to be one of the first to get my hands on a physical copy of @kanarinka 's Counting Feminicide. Short summary: a must-read from anyone working on data activism and "restorative/transformative" goals. https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262048873/counting-feminicide/

Recent data story I love: local youth using data to investigate evidence of discriminatory grocery pricing. I was lucky enough to work with some of these @HydeSquareTF future leaders on our Data Theatre project and they helped us so much 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/02/21/metro/hyde-square-youth-stop-and-shop-pricing/

Really enjoyed the informal watercolor viz in the recent NYT article on MENA race and identity and the census. You can be creative even in serious data stories. This style speaks to me of the human and fuzzy nature of the data. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/02/25/us/census-race-ethnicity-middle-east-north-africa.html

Tech update: after scheduled maintenance, Media Cloud online news archive search capability is back online, with data from Nov through now. Re-ingestion of all 2023 should be done by mid-March. https://search.mediacloud.org

Also BTW... more news about robots in the US than in India (English language only)

Appreciating public data dashboards recently. I've been masking in unventilated public spaces for the last few weeks after seeing this super-helpful wastewater surveillance data. Have winter COVID rates in Boston have peaked? 🤞🏽 Stay safe. https://www.mass.gov/info-details/wastewater-surveillance-reporting

"Scraping is not a crime", it is a critical tool in the digital journalist's toolbox. So pleased to see @themarkup file an amicus brief in support of using journalists and others using code to pull public web information. 👏🏽 https://themarkup.org/news/2020/12/03/why-web-scraping-is-vital-to-democracy

All the tools I find for building journalistic scrollytelling sites use hierarchy-based models for layout. But their ancestors (Macromedia Director, Adobe Flash) used timeline-based models. Do you know of any WSYWIG web scrollytelling tools that use a timeline for layout?

How big is YouTube? It's been fascinating to watch my @iDPI_UMass colleagues explore this and now their work is finally out. Visit https://tubestats.org/ or read the exhaustive paper on their novel random sampling method: https://journalqd.org/article/view/4066/3766. Studying media sharing sites like this is critical for understanding evolving social dynamics that shape the physical world.

Excited to share newly published Media Cloud work with my colleagues Meg Heckman and Emily Ndulue - investigating partisanship in gendered news coverage in VP Kamala Harris. It sadly persists, especially in media appealing to far right, and shows struggles to handle her multiple identities.
