I commute via :unicycle:, 🛴, "halfbike" or :penny_farthing: because they are great fun! But I love all types of cycles.

I also like minimalist tech: non-smartphones, old school digital watches, Slackware, Gemini/Gopher.

I feel very strongly that if you use a "free service" and enjoy it you should donate to its up keep.

Ok I risk the wrath of the Casio Cult but I decided to buy a Skmei "homage" (ok "rip off"). I wanted to do a comparison. I picked the F-94W style one because it is less common in this part of the world and I am not trying to pass this off as the real thing.

Visually it's very close in quality to the Casio and cost just $5.41🇺🇸 but not quite the same. The LCD is noticeably clearer viewed at a range of angles. However, that lighting system is fantastic compared to the tiny green LED. Also 50M WR.

@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

When you enable the backlight the LCD inverts and it really lights up. Even in a well lit room, you can clearly see it.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

@RL_Dane Well it was mainly just to see one in real life. Also I can lend (or give) it to my youngest who also likes these style of watches and tends to scratch the crap out of my watches.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

@RL_Dane front on yes but the Casio is way better at a range of angles.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

@RL_Dane No idea. The name is not great IMHO or at least not from a Western perspective. I presume it works in Chinese.

I also do not like the font but do think it works better on this face than their F-91W clone. Somehow it fits better with this style.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

@RL_Dane yes it was, I saw that after you got it wrong, so I edited my original post.

But front on it is very sharp on the Skmei actually. The Casio is a better allrounder for readability during the day. Although… the Skmei would win at night with that backlight.

Next to my Casio F-84W for a quick visual comparison.

Finally I got my watch set correctly!

@matt Why would you cry. It is the correct time and now it is accurate to the (decimal) second.

Or are those tears of joy? 😉

This is going to make setting my other watch so much easier!

Ohh… It's 4.80. Lunch time!

I know in many parts of the world midday exactly would be a more common time to eat lunch but this is what we typically do in Norway. 🤷

I was too busy to post when it got to 666 (though I did take a quick picture).

Why 666? Well it is a fun number 😈 and it is pretty much the standard, end of working day here in 🇳🇴

Just realized my tilde.zone account got approved a few days back. Yay!

Should I operate both accounts or just migrate over? I guess I should run both for a little while before deciding whether or not I should migrate.

Honestly, the 500 character limit hasn't been quite as annoying as I thought it would be.

@joel @RL_Dane Just putting it out there that Vivaldi Social has a 1337 limit… 🤓

So Casio fans, there is often talk about how module 593's major failing is its backlight. And yes, it is pretty weak and uneven. I too have thrown shade at it and yet, if I am totally honest I don't recall ever having struggled to read it in real life.

While in photos it often comes out looking totally unreadable, I find that with the naked eye (in the dark at night), I have always read the entire display just fine.

Is this just me?

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

Also, don't get me wrong, the lighting found in similar watches with the “Illuminator™” or multi LEDs is more pleasant, especially aesthetically but the basic lighting in the 593 seems to me to be good enough for real world usage. Maybe something about my eyes and light sensitivity or how and when I use the light? 🤷🏼

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

Just another thought. I think there is a difference between going into a darkened room in the middle of the day, compared to checking your watch in bed in the middle of the night (assuming you wear a watch at night or have it on the bedside table).

For the latter your scotopic vision (night vision) will be fully functioning and you will be much more sensitive to the blue-green wavelengths that the little LED produces light in the range of.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

To expand on that point, "The eye takes approximately 20–30 minutes to fully adapt from bright sunlight to complete darkness and becomes 10,000 to 1,000,000 times more sensitive than at full daylight."†

Thus waking at night the brightness of the LED may be sufficient, while if you just walk into a dark room in the middle of the day… it might not be.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptation_(eye)#Efficiency#Efficiency)

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

So perhaps my lack of issues with this form of lighting are that my primary use case for the LED is looking at the time in bed to discern how close it is to morning. And indeed with the LED strategically placed on the left (closest to the hours), I often would not need to read the entire time anyway. Being able to tell it is 3:3…[something] would be good enough, if my plan is to wake at 6AM.

I suppose for someone who often enters darkened rooms, that LED however might not be good enough.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

A question for owners of Casio A158W, F-91W and F-84W watches.

Aesthetics aside, is the basic LED lighting on the module 593 actually usable for how you use your watch?

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

Also for those of you who do have problems, have any of you tried one of these simple "backlight spreaders"?

It sounds too good to be true and yet reviews of this simple hack/mod on sites like Etsy are really good.

I am tempted to buy one just to try it out, even though as I said, I am not actually hitting the issue myself. Still… it also looks better and aesthetics are a factor. 🤔

https://www.etsy.com/no-en/listing/1448973768/back-light-spreader-for-casio-f-91w-a

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

Hmm… it seems that Etsy seller even sells a lumed version of this light spreader that in addition to giving you a more even light allows,

"… you to read the watch in pitch dark for about an hour without using the LED light."

Ok, screw it. I am gonna buy one and try it for science! 👨‍🔬

Gonna try and keep this up…

Today’s #WristCheck is my #Casio Royale (AE-1200) with an SKXMOD case/sapphire crystal and an aftermarket red strap, because why not? 🤷‍♂️

Interested pooch is a bonus. 🐾

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

@kev Are you happy with your Skxmod stuff? I ask as I just spent £150 on a complete build of a A168. 😜

P.S. Yes, I am lazy.

ruari,
@ruari@velocipederider.com avatar

@kev Ok the steel straps look very high quality on the videos and reviews I saw but in all honesty I went with the FKM rubber strap anyway, despite similar comments about it being overpriced by reviewers.

Thing is, I wasn't sure I wanted the full steel look in the end. Plus these rubber straps are often very comfortable. So I just swallowed the price anyway. 🤷🏼

What I have ordered should look pretty much identical to the video from this linked thread
