From years of being bored, unsatisfied, or struggling in various jobs and industries, I finally feel like I have come home.

I'm so happy to join an industry with such brilliant, interesting, and gloriously nerdy people - I mean this in the best possible way!

I have attended both Beyond Tellerrand Düsseldorf and CSS Day 2024 and, wow. Huge thank yous to the organisers, speakers, and to the many warm and funny fellow attendees I had the joy to socialise with.

This is my church.

My home from is of course going to end up delayed. Might be stuck in Osnabrück for a while! Anyone else?

Huh. I looked out of the window of my train and saw what looked like an African savannah. Then I watched more landscape pass by, and it started to look like a little the sandy pine forests you get near sandy beaches in Scandinavia. I went to Google maps to see if we were by the coast, and nope.

Apparently it was Het Kootwijkerzand. In inland desert reserve in the Netherlands. TIL.

In her closing talk @stubbornella is asking for input of what we want out of our Masonry CSS properties.

I feel like we could forever get input into how it should work, and the CSSWG might be able to put something out that covers 99% of wants...

BUT as soon as it's released with whatever constraints it may have - the people that have ideas and can bend CSS to their will (paging @stephenhay and @kizu!) will start subverting it to do something new and different!

Bring it on :)

If anyone at #CSSDay wants to know the story about the little slightly creepy bell pepper stickers :happy_pepper: -

They're based on this thread: https://front-end.social/@sarajw/109994451332222396

The design is by @andycarolan 💖

To the people with FOMO - you're not missing out.

It's terrible, the people suck, the conversations are boring, the talks are rubbish.

CSS is lame, the web platform needs fixing with layers upon layers of JS, I miss Flash, bring back Dreamweaver, websites should be images with clickable regions.

You're fine. Enjoy whatever it is you're doing instead, we're having an awful time.

Re @stubbornella and special language within companies (her example was 🐑 for "ship/sheep it"):

People in my company in Germany react with a 🇬🇧 on any announcement of someone being off sick.

The code for this in slack is :flag-gb:
German for "get well soon" is "Gute Besserung". GB. Great Britain.

My world is complete. @kevinpowell started his talk with "Hello my front end friends!"

sarajw,

Yessssss.

Amazing how much backlash and stress @kevinpowell was put under from just using min() and margin-inline!

Ahahah @kizu thank you - I didn't know I needed you to tell me that you have too much free time, and not to feel bad about not experimenting like you - but actually that made me feel good!

I love that people like you are around, and that you have time and energy to push hard on all the boundaries!

Sarah Dyan was introduced as being "very brave" for coming to #CSSDay and talking about utility-first CSS!

I agree but I'm happy to listen :)

My biggest grievance with tailwind in particular is how it's cemented breakpoints, while going fluid feels much better.

It may just be that there's a lag between what CSS can do now, and what surfaces through tailwind and other utility first frameworks.

I dunno 🤷

I guess I think utility styles are a good tool that can be used alongside normal CSS.

I agree with this quote. Forgive. Yes.

But especially if our job is to keep up and understand, we still need to strive for it, even if we're forgiven for falling behind.

None of the excellent new heavy-JS-replacing CSS would be used if we didn't do so. Hence this conference. Hence all this discourse online. Hence all the articles and posts and advocating and devrels and working groups. Hence the arguments and controversy.

We want to improve life for everyone online. It's important.

Omg. @SaraSoueidan's material is dense and fast and great and my brain is busy.

Ooh. @stephenhay is speaking of constraints feeding creativity as people try to push the boundaries.

He's about to talk about rounded corners! Exactly. We spent so much effort making corner.gif or shadow.gif for table layouts, then CSS updated and made it easy, and rounded corners & shadows fell out of fashion 😅

The same is happening now with Masonry layout. People have done it with JS - I have a feeling that as soon as it becomes available via CSS, it'll be uncool because too easy!

Dude. Feel like I'm back in my old engineering maths lectures 😵‍💫

(I say this with love, @matthiasott. Indeed CSS is a programming language)

Re alt text - will add more code specifics later, sorry! Thank goodness for editing, thanks Mastodon 🦣
