One day holidays will be relaxing again, right?

(The kids are 6 and 4 years old.)

...Right?! 🙏

It's good to be home, thanks ruby slippers (aka. Airbus A320) 👠👠

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@a11yMel I should probably specify I mean it in the British sense of holiday, so a vacation away from home -but yesss

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@DodoTheDev hah! Fair enough. Yep they can do that at home!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@hugh yep we've just had 10 days away seeing family and friends and oooof

Barefoot shoes are good and all, but wandering around Legoland Windsor for two days makes me wish I'd brought something more supportive and squishy

sarajw,

@tom_streeter hah!! But there was a box of bricks in the Lego hotel room and OF COURSE I ended up stepping on some

Independent of each other, Lucy and I discovered Hans Rosling. Me via @sarajw I believe?

Anyway, she currently has his book ‘Factfulness’ on loan from the library.

And I just got a notification from the library that my reservation of ‘Factfulness’ is now available and is ready for collection.

We had no idea. Totally independent lines of thought.

(We’ve already both read his bio, ‘How I Learned to Understand the World’. A delight.)

@johnnydecimal I love Hans Rosling. I'm still so sad he died early - our world could do with more of his voice.

If you live in the UK or USA, you need to understand one thing about the coming election:

You need to vote defensively.

Neither of the main parties are appealing. But if you don't vote for the lesser evil you may end up helping a totalitarian horror get elected.

Hold your nose and goddamn vote, dammit. THEN go on protests. Because if you don't vote for the lesser evil, the victor will welcome your protests with bullets.

The prize for political purity this time round is a shallow grave.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@larsmb @cstross at least Germany is not first past the post - we can choose our local rep and then vote with our hearts in the PR vote. It's not really the same.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@project1enigma @larsmb @cstross true. I wonder if that rule came about for a reason - maybe without it, there's too much fracturing and instability 🤔 but then I guess that's what those who prefer FPTP will say about PR...

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@project1enigma @larsmb @cstross mmm. Fair enough. Coming from living under first past the post voting where up to 49.9% of people in each constituency aren't represented, what happens in Germany even with the 5% threshold feels like a vast improvement - but I can concede that it's still not ideal.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@moz @project1enigma @larsmb @cstross fair! So does Australia do PR then?

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@moz @project1enigma @larsmb @cstross sounds complicated from here but also proof that voting doesn't have to be super duper simple!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@mainec thank you! I can read it but yes, Google translate is helpful sometimes :)

Edit: I figured there'd be a reason to introduce the threshold

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@mainec lol yes and git blame "who the hell thought this would be a good idea?!"

Any tips for consoling a four year old who is suddenly very very upset about the idea of death and dying?

We're making it clear he's got a long long long time to be alive yet, as have we, while trying to be real and not tell any fairy stories - but he's very young of course and can't imagine ever being sort of "done" and really really doesn't want to ever die 😭

(Please nothing about climate change etc. in this situation - I'm well aware I've brought a child into a period of change that sucks.)

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@woodsbythesea I think it was seeing pictures and statues of people in a museum and asking if they existed in real life, and we said yes, but long ago.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@jake4480 @Tijn yep fairly sure my firstborn has just accepted it.

I did get pretty riled up once after he had done something reckless with his little bike (like, just shot out into the road) and I was fairly clear with him that he could just be dead, that's it. He was like, have another baby then, a new me, and I had to tell him that this wouldn't make a new baby, it wouldn't bring him back.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@florianziegler danke dir!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@prozacchiwawa sounds great but might be a challenge for me to understand let alone digest for a four year old 😅

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@boldewyn those are all really good tips thank you ❤️

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@woodsbythesea oh yes we've had that worry already! We explained to him it was more like a painting - he indeed has had that thought, so it's not at all stupid. He was also worried about fossils/skeletons and being "turned into" bones.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@angstlotse yes agreed we aren't telling him to stop being sad about death, but that if he's sad every day about dying then the life he gets will be less fun 💜

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@mateocosta thank you x

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@scrwd I agree with your sentiments. Am 40 and as an ex-Christian I
don't believe in heaven any more - if I ever did - but I take comfort from all the weird and amazing stories you hear from people who have had near-death experiences.

I said (because he asked how dying feels) that some people who were rescued by doctors at the last minute saw a calm tunnel with light at the end and that they felt happy and free - but then he asked "does everyone get rescued by a doctor at the last minute?" 🫣
