Sorry that I’ve been quieter on here than usual this week. It’s been half term and I’ve been trying to engage in some self care and family time 😊

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@andycarolan like the others say, never apologise! Half term can be wild too - I semi regretted taking our kids to Legoland during half term, but they loved it (we just came back from a little tour of southern England, exhausted ! Now time for my self care...)

I'm looking at mastodon some more today and probably tomorrow. On our last episode, we reached a milestone of getting a local mastodon build up and running using docker. The docker part is important, because my goal is to get two local instances running and have them talk to each other. I'm thinking that's the easiest way for me to be able to inspect the ActivityPub protocol more directly.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@polotek from people who have self hosted, as soon as they have non negligible followerships, the traffic apparently intensifies a lot. Is there too much handshaking pinging around?

I feel like I've heard several times that the protocol is very "chatty" and I want to know what that means, is it inefficient, or simply required because of the federation?

I guess it's connected to what went around the other week, some people realised just sharing a link on masto could bring their websites down?

One thing that made my latest holiday/vacay more stressful was the endless pre-booking emails.

Pre-book food! Pre-book activities! Book early arrival! Book extra treats! Check out the latest! You're coming soon! We're excited to see you! Are you excited? Let me upsell you! Don't leave anything until you're actually here, it'll all be booked up! Stress out now, relax later!

FUCK THE FUCK OFF

Centerparcs and a Legoland Windsor hotel booking, in this case.

Exhausting.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@ovan yeeep they've both already asked me for feedback, offering me the chance of a discount by filling out yet another form, just aarrrgghhh

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@threetonesun Ooof, yeah. It's just so much. If these places need you to pay extra or pre-book stuff months in advance to avoid hour-long queues, they're letting too many people in.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@threetonesun We were thinking that at Legoland Windsor, so many rides and attractions were being run so inefficiently - some could have had two trains running instead of just one, on others they clearly needed another member of staff, like - but who cares, it's Lego so people come in their droves to what is actually a tired and worn-out theme park and willingly wait and wait or pay through the nose to skip ahead - because the Danish toy and brand is so strong.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@threetonesun when it's for kids it can get pretty crappy before they notice, I reckon. It's the parents having to grin and bear it .. this is for the British Legoland as it's all for kids really, it'd be super weird to go as an adult.

In the same way most of us say “goodbye” without realising it derives from “god be with ye”, maybe one day people will end conversations with “likensubscribe”

An odd post today as we creep towards the end of the month:

A love letter to omg.lol, and why I'll probably stop using it before too long despite that love.

https://bendaubney.blog/2024/04/30/looking-back-with.html

(Contains plenty of envy and admiration for @cory, @sarajw, and @robb, amongst others)

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@bendaubney quick rundown:

I followed a tutorial word for word to build a svelte blog thing. It was cool but kind of formulaic in how it worked:

I designed something from the bottom up because I was messing with CSS position: sticky; and what I could make it do:

Then I smashed them both together with Astro, using a blog template from https://astro.new

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@bendaubney I posted all that because this quote struck me from your post:

> "I find the makeshift approach I have right now really lacking compared to both what they’re doing and compared to what I want to do."

No! No no no!

Makeshift approach is EVERYTHING. Makeshift was how it all happened. Makeshift is how it still is, under the surface.

My code is sometimes nice, sometimes spaghetti, I use "change something and see what happens" technique, rather than knowing what I'm doing. Keep going.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@barrysampson @bendaubney @cory @robb yes, duct tape and dreams lol.

And I feel like mine has rather run its course, I don't know when I'll get time to rebuild, but I'm eyeing up 11ty as a base on which to build next time.

I wouldn't do it from scratch though! I'd definitely pick up some kind of prebuilt template that isn't too opinionated and hack it about.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@bendaubney lol yep! If you look at the date of that tutorial I followed when it was fresh, it was Dec 2021, it's 2024 now!

Some people like @lynnandtonic manage to make a new site about annually and I just can't even 😅

And I work as a frontend engineer (still not sure how I swung that), so I should be able to knock something good up...

Oh also! The Svelte tutorial had so much transferrable stuff. Blog post frontmatter, componentisation, layouts, JS imports... I took it wholesale to Astro.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@bendaubney @keenan yesssss best way to start any blog hahah

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@keenan @bendaubney TELL US WHY because font stuff is weirdly hard!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@keenan @bendaubney Honestly even if you feel silly, something like that helps trigger people into finding their own issues!

When I was new to my job I had a "when error, do.." cheatsheet which was really like, beginner stuff - but it found a more senior backend dev the one thing he hadn't checked and he got himself unblocked.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@lynnandtonic @bendaubney "just" design, pffft. Now even the people talented at front end are minimising the skill and work involved 😆

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@starshaped @bendaubney @lynnandtonic well mine hasn't really changed since I got this job, and part of the reason for building it was to get said job, so, yeah.
