Prediction:
MSM will join bluesky
Alt-MSM will go full-tilt on nostr
In the long run, The fediverse will be the thunderdome of people who refuse to completely toe-the-line between the previous two camps.

sim,

@colinsmatt11 @vriska @gabriel Zaps are, indeed, really cringe. Makes me wonder if these people even read what they type when they get excited about it.

sim,

@colinsmatt11 @vriska @gabriel It would be nice if we could go back to small villages, where we can cultivate high trust and barter with our neighbours depending on what we're good at and each need. Rather than all this weird shit we get now with corporatism or digital currency. I don't mind adding some currency with that too, as long as it isn't tied to what I mentioned.

sim,

@colinsmatt11 @vriska @gabriel A small village is nice because it scales better than at the global level where you don't know most people. But I suppose you could get things at a more global level that might be harder at the local level, especially where there is an excess in some areas that would otherwise go to waste.

sim,

@colinsmatt11 @vriska @gabriel I suppose that is where we differ in our mindsets then. I would much rather have a better relationship and know the person that I am trading with. But I'm mostly stuck with a faceless corporation for most things.

the 'tumblr taught me I'm a product" thing rubs me the wrong way because tumblr is so infamously bad at serving ads, monetizing, and using their massive base for literally anything that the userbase devalued the website by a BILLION dollars and the best tumblr ads can do are advertise home buying loans to 16 year old steven universe fans

tumblr taught me that enough weirdos can cause the valuation of major social media platforms to crater if they're weird enough

sim,

@vriska @RustyCrab It does make me think now that you mention it. I wonder why that is.

Still can't believe that teachers are telling six year olds that they can change being a boy or girl. Biology isn't something you can change... and then to tell this to disabled six year olds is... how confusing is that?

sim,

I thought that I had it bad learning about this as a teenager online, probably through social media. That was confusing enough. But to tell six year olds? What is going to happen to them?

sim,

@condret More likely that they are going to be rather confused. Maybe even feel like they've been lied to by their teachers. Especially when we are talking about disabled children, things have to be more carefully explained to them.

"Violence against women is still prevalent in our society. Hope in Heels is an event that spreads awareness on violence against women while encouraging men and boys to be part of the solution. We wore their signature pink heels in support to this important cause."

I don't know when pink heels became a signature woman thing or is it the signature for "Hope in Heels"? Can someone explain this to me? This just seems like the commercialisation of women again and this event is not helping.

sim,

@condret It sticks in mine for all the wrong reasons. Like a mockery.

sim,

@condret I suspect that the heels idea came first. What is the first thing that men like this think of women wearing? I'm sure that we can do better now, especially as women are more likely to wear black shoes, sandals, flats or maybe trainers now. If you want to walk in the shoes that women are wearing when they are likely to be harmed, there you have it. Unless they are dressing up for a party or something.

I really do think that before transitioning, more people should be given resources by the hospital or therapy recommending it that go through all the possible changes they might go through. Perhaps in a video form that is more relatable than a form of the side effects.

It might stop cases where, for example, a woman had an amazing singing voice where she could reach higher notes... she took testosterone for a bit and lost those higher notes. It has taken her months to restore what she has after stopping it. She may never reach the high notes she used to because of this.

I don't think I would have recommended testosterone to her if her singing was that important to her. I would have worked with her to use singing as her therapy since it got her through so far. It could be something positive for her while she worked through her other issues.

sim,

@dushman @TrigonometryIsPoopy @Moon @animeirl @creamqueen Until your train gets delayed or cancelled, or the staff on the train decide to go on strike leaving fewer services. Or, like here, you end up going during peak time and it is overcrowded. Or you have to change trains which can take longer than 10 minutes. There are plenty of pros and cons whichever method of transport you take. It's not as simple as getting on the train either as you have to plan your route in advance, buy your ticket and check that you are on the right train and finish at the right station rather than missing it. It can also be expensive. Sometimes it actually is cheaper to pay petrol to get somewhere than take the train, which I couldn't believe.

sim,

@dushman @TrigonometryIsPoopy @Moon @animeirl @creamqueen I prefer taking a car over the headaches of a train, and I used to have to take a train on a regular basis. I don't want to do that again.

sim,

@animeirl @dushman @TrigonometryIsPoopy @Moon @creamqueen I'm not American. I'm aware of the extra costs involved, but if we're just talking about a single journey... it's not always cheaper. Also, with a train... you are still paying for the maintenance, insurance, and any profits the train companies have. You can just split it over more people so it doesn't seem as much. It can also be subsidised so taxpayer money is going into the train service, keeping the cost lower at the point of entry but more expensive over time. That happens here too.

It's a bit like arguing that it is cheaper to rent than to own your own house. (Until it isn't) I think there are more merits to consider and what gets prioritised there will differ. Also, location does matter. If I'm living in a city (Heaven forbid), then I might think more like you are here. The services might be more often too.

sim,

@animeirl @Moon @TrigonometryIsPoopy @creamqueen @dushman That's a relief. They are already very anti-car where I live, it's getting harder to find parking spaces. I don't want to encourage them further otherwise I probably wouldn't leave my house.

I have to admit, I do like his idea of a path that goes through the square as more of a green space and not so straight, it beats the alleyways that we have which are just a small path with walls beside it. If people had plenty of garden space still, this would work great... could make the square in the middle a community space. More inviting.
