Cold weather is my favourite for running.

It was minus 5C / 23F, felt colder, and such a beautiful morning, I decided to slow it right, right down to enjoy the crispness more - barely more than a power walk.

Now, I am always , even in such cold, as my thighs are made of asbestos and I love the feel of freezing air on bare thigh, but I did need my silly hat on to protect my small, delicate and gracefully positioned gentleman's ears.

at that sticky point in training where i’m working hard to just stand still, meaning i’m going to have to work REAL hard to move forward.

i have been rehabilitating a sore tendon since checks notes … May 🤢, so training at this level without pain is definite progress.

coach has mentioned he definitely wants me to start pushing harder now, so I’m 80% excited, but also 20% scared about what ‘harder’ looks like on top of kids, job, chess, social life… 💀

    Yesterday was so hard…

    I ran my own route to meet my wife at the finish… the first hour was uphill most of the way with the blazing sun in my face. Pretty much the second I turned off into the wooded/downhill section of my route, the sun decided it had had enough and slipped behind a cloud, almost as if it knew!

    Congratulations to anybody who escaped both heat exhaustion AND hypothermia in yesterday’s Great North Run. I was literally on the last boat out of Shields before the storm hit.

    Not seen rain like it since 28th June 2012.

    this really hit me this morning when i realised I was actively avoiding google-ing something (kids’ lunchbox ideas) in anticipation of how bad the experience would be.

    lol I don’t have a great mnemonic or anything, but basically, in normal writing when you add ‘extra info’, you stick it in the parentheses (you know, like this), so that’s where the link goes, because it’s extra info.

    You then obviously have to surround the link text in square brackets, because otherwise it wouldn’t have any brackets round it at all! simple!

    So many people inventing things off the top of their heads about today, I’m repeating myself even though I said I wouldn’t:

    ✅ Women can — and do — play men in competitive chess, all the time.

    Posting this once and once only, because I’ve seen a million people (including friends on other websites) get this not-quite-right today:

    There are not "mens" and "womens" categories.

    The categories are "open" and "womens".

    Women can and do compete in open competition, but many prefer to also (or instead) compete in womens-only competition.

    regardless, FIDE are a rotten, misogynist, transphobic bunch.
