good morning! Cannonball Adderley - Somethin’ Else @vinylrecords

I love Cannonball Adderley and in particular his collaborations with his brother Nat, but on this instead we get Miles Davis on probably the best record where he’s credited as session musician.

an intermittent 🧵 of great 90s by acts that never made it big. please add yours!

always sounds to me like so much of 90s West Coast #HipHop tracks its sound and aesthetic to Roy Ayers. e.g., Dr Dre only sampled this track once, for a Detox track, but I can't help suspecting he took much more from it for his sound.

the "my life, my life, my life" tag was true Cali staple, used by Tupac, Ice Cube, Mc Eiht ("my life, my life, my life, with a tech nine").

#NowPlaying Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Everybody Loves the Sunshine #vinyl @vinylrecords

Record cover of Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Everybody Loves the Sunshine, with a photograph of the artist in a yellow t-shirt. The music playing is the title track, with a low bass grove, a piano riff, and a high-pitched continuous synthesiser sound. The lyrics start with "my life, my life, my life, in the sunshine".

recorded, by the way, at Electric Lady in New York, but that doesn't make it any less Southern Californian. @vinylrecords

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/jun/19/how-we-made-roy-ayers-everybody-loves-the-sunshine is a lovely read on this track -- "Roy would record after gigs, from midnight through to the morning. He thought musicians played better when they were tired, because they wouldn’t be thinking about anything." @vinylrecords

weather has turned back to standard UK fare, so to compensate Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine @vinylrecords

I know fewer tracks make for (potentially) better sound, but if you end up with only 2 tracks to a side, shouldn’t that double LP just have been a singleton after all? 🍋 @vinylrecords

have been wanting a copy for a while - just found at the local record fair. The cover is a bit discoloured, but the vinyl looks great - fingers crossed it will be when listening later today. 1982 Japanese pressing. @vinylrecords

some crackles, but nothing that doesn’t add character, and what a fantastic record to play from vinyl, the sound is just sublime. @vinylrecords

Vinyl record cover of Miles Davis’ We Want Miles. The music playing is the instrumental funk jazz track Jean-Pierre.

was recently in a Leeds BHF store looking for @vinylrecords and I have to say while not actually surprised (the UK being what the UK is) was nevertheless appalled to come across several Al Jolson records stacked between the rest. 🤬

@hamsterhuey @vinylrecords it’s such a great one to put on - the fade in of Natural Mystic just perfect after the needle drop. Also loving that the sides aren’t labelled “Side” but “Part 1”, “Part 2”. I’m partial to Part 1.
