One for the Apple geeks: a friend has an antediluvian iMac G5 - the one in a white polycarbonate case. It still runs, but has a habit of spontaneously rebooting. When it does, it makes two startup chimes.

What might be causing this?

My friend doesn’t use this old machine now, but wants to be able to run it long enough to retrieve files from it.

I’m standing right in front of the surgery receptionist to ask about making a non-urgent appointment to see a doctor or nurse.

"Use the online system."

But I’m standing right here, right now. Why can’t I make an appointment?

"Computer says no."

I should’ve stood my ground. Worse, the online system only accepts appointments during surgery opening hours. I mean, pardon? WHAT? WHAT‽ It’s a feckin' computer. It should work ANY time!

Okay, washing machine report.

It’s clean and shiny - for now. Slight problem with the hot water feed pipe being installed backwards, so the machine wouldn’t go back far enough under the worktop. I’ve just dealt with that myself.

(The delivery/installers did everything so quickly. Silly mistakes made. I can blame them, but I won’t.)

Manufacturer Recommends running a drum wash cycle as first run. All fine, until the spin cycle. Clonking noise, like the drum is hitting something. That (1/2)

Now things are beginning to make sense again, I’m planning a new mobile purchase. When I say "new" I’m going refurbished.

Apple phone fans: as iPhone 15 is imminent, would iPhone 12 Pro be okay? Is it new enough to still run a current operating system?

Please don’t tell me I need an Android phone. I’m not a fan.

Audiophile chums: a question if I may.

Best Beloved and I listen to podcasts together. To do that, I use my phone with a Y-splitter to stereo jacks. Best Beloved is deaf, so he likes lots of volume set on the phone, while I use headphones with an inline volume control.

I want a new set of over-ear 'phones with inline volume control. It’s hard sifting out things meant for taking phone calls or controlling the phone. Any pointers, please?

Feeling very out of sorts today, so I’m playing around with my Universal Airfield photo plank. I’ve needed something to disguise the back edge where it often meets the backdrop in a rather abrupt manner. I’ve settled for some balsa to build a small bank, and bought in some laser cut timber fencing. Now I’m making a mess!

The problem with my house is it’s full of stuff. In order to do something, like set up my ultrasonic bath, I have to move a heap of stuff to somewhere else to make room. I think I need to use something, realise how much effort is required, and end up ignoring the job a bit longer.

What I want, really, is a dedicated room where all the equipment can be left set up and ready for use. That’s not going to happen any time soon.

I know I’ve wittered on about feeling forced into upgrading my desktop Mac before. I’m feeling it’s becoming something a little more likely to happen sooner rather than later.

I’ve attached an image which outlines my current hardware and software setup.

I’m vacillating between replacing the Mac mini with a current version, or switching to an iMac. I’d appreciate pros and cons from anyone that is more clued up on the Apple scene than me.
