Professional modelmaking

I fell into professional modelmaking by accident. Various changes in my circumstances had meant my graphic design career path – such as it was – was very much declining. When at a society meeting, a friend asked if I would build a model railway coach kit for him. He was impressed with the finished model, and suggested I talk to the kit manufacturer to see if they might find me more work.

Actually…

Just before I pile into my main hobby modelling project, I want to add a subsection about model road vehicles. The range and quality of 1/43rd scale model vehicles, suitable for model railway use, has improved a lot in the past few years. It wasn’t always so. I have built a few 1/43rd scale vehicles over the years. Without a layout to place them on, I have generally donated them to other modellers of my acquaintance.

I won’t mind if you skip it! What is my obsession? In the late 1970s I attended a comprehensive secondary school. It was about the time that we teenagers were being encouraged to think about the world of work.

Earlier, to cope with a DAB dead spot (a multi-storey car park) I started playing some choons from my phone. I chose The Travelling Wilburys, as I’ve not played them in ages.

Later, in the Co-op, what does the in-store radio station play? They pretty much never play anything I recognise - but "Handle Me With Care" came over the speakers.

This same universe is one where the girl on the checkout had never come across marmalade before. I mean, sorry-what-pardon‽ 🤨

The rather thoughtful, perhaps wistful, young man in the photograph is my paternal grandfather, Edwin. He gazes benignly at the camera, his slightly wavy hair neatly trimmed and parted, clean shaven, a slight smile reminiscent of the Mona Lisa. My Journey Into Sound – Part Three

In Part Two, I had fun learning new ways to record noise. It was entirely “studio” based, though. My interest in audio continued during the late 1980s, but life was sort of getting in the way. Eventually, things settled, and I met Best Beloved. Happily, he shared so many of my interests it was really easy to rekindle the audio side of my world.
