What open source programs do you recommend for Windows? (Windows exclusive or not)

I am and all my life have been a Linux user, I have nothing against Windows or MacOS, I just like Linux, and lately I have been experimenting with Windows in a virtual machine and I don’t really know much open source software there apart from the one that is cross-platform like Firefox or Joplin....

sonalder,

This isn’t a FOSS apps list but a Free (as free beer) software list for Windows with a bunch of cool FOSS apps alternativeto.net/list/29653/my-windows-setup/

sonalder,

You can buy the SMS verification for Telegram on sites likes smspool.net using crypt I currencies such as Bitcoin or Monero.

sonalder,

I’de rather go with Linux Mint Cinnamon or Nobara with their custom GNOME DE

sonalder,

I think you confuse security and privacy. Samsung are pretty secure from what I saw. They are not private at all however. You can debloat it with adb and maybe tools such as Universal Android Debloater.

There is a couple of guide such as this one: linustechtips.com/…/1402380-ultimate-samsung-oneu…

sonalder,

The real downside of brave is the cryptocrap. It is still optional. However the fact that it support the chromium monopoly is also a bad point.

sonalder,

If you don’t install software made from people that are not align with your ethics there are probably more than just brave.

sonalder,

I will rather go with a second hand 2-3 years old premium laptop from a Linux manufacturer such as System76 or Tuxedo.

sonalder,

I wish I discovered that sooner thanks you. Except a few games they all have good artwork, etc…

sonalder,

I founded it but I have a Nobara Lutris and it can’t find it :(

sonalder,

Thanks Steam ROM Manager looks nice

sonalder,

I like Fairphone’s mission but kinda feel meh about their execution. Don’t get me wrong they probably do better than everyone else. But releasing a phone per year isn’t great for the environment. Removing the headphone jack wasn’t for ecological reasons. Making tiny earbuds isn’t in hand with easy reparability. And you can’t upgrade anything !

I wish they will slow the pace for a release every 2 years with better upgradability. I also wish they would work with GrapheneOS so the hardware and firmware are secure enough for the Graphene team to work on that device.

But nice that the brand is still alive. I hope they won’t go too much into green washing.

sonalder,

Oh I was pretty sure the FP4 was released in 2022 as I got a 5 years warranty that will end up in 2027.

Mullvad Browser (no TOR, no VPN) (monero.town)

The Mullvad Browser is a privacy-focused web browser developed in collaboration with Mullvad VPN and the Tor Project. It aims to eliminate data collection and provide user-centric browsing services, ensuring online activity remains private and secure. The browser has the same fingerprinting protection as the Tor Browser, but...

sonalder,

FlatPak is not the as secure as everyone think it is.

sonalder,

I don’t have that comparison but here are some resources that critics FlatPak’s misleading security

sonalder,

BEST : Pixel with GrapheneOS Second best : Fairphone 4 or SHIFT 6mq with CalyxOS Third best : /e/OS or iodéOS or SimpleOS

If you can live without Google Mobile Services or microG Divest OS comes in second position when locked bootloader is supported and third when it's not supported

sonalder,

Will look into it thx

Best de-Googled Android ROM for non Pixel phones?

I know that Graphene OS is the best OS for privacy/security on a Pixel, but I have both a non-Pixel phone. What is the second best ROM in this case? I know that Lineage still has some Google telemetry since it's meant to be as close to AOSP as possible and not actually de-Googled. Maybe /e/ OS then?

sonalder,

CalyxOS will start supports Fairphone 4, OnePlus 8T and 9 DivestOS supports tons of devices however not all can have their bootloader relocked or works nicely you have to check every devices they listed on their website.
