sp6,

If you're using Lemmy in a browser, you can block posts that contain certain keywords using uBlock Origin. I made a YSK post about it: https://lemmy.world/post/435133

sp6,

Just be aware that "stable" in the linux world means "old." All of the software in the Debian repos will be much more out of date than some other distros like Pop!_OS, Fedora, or even Ubuntu. If you upgrade to newer hardware, or want to use newer software, Debian may not support it without jumping through some major hoops.

Is there a way to filter specific keywords for Lemmy?

Either in a client (I've been using Jeroba) or in my Lemmy profile. I'd love to be able to block words I don't want to see stuff about... Like trying to avoid spoilers for movies, or just wanting to avoid mentions of certain people, but without blocking entire communities.

sp6,

Not easily, but if you're on a browser, you can add a uBlock Origin filter for keywords in posts. I go more in detail about it in the YSK post I made earlier today: https://lemmy.world/post/435133 (Instead of filtering for instance/server names, just filter for keywords)

sp6,

I think it works on non-beta Android Firefox too. I just meant stuff like Jerboa, Mlem, etc; mobile apps you download from an app store.

sp6,

That blocks a single community on an instance, not the whole instance. So take this community, youshouldknow@lemmy.world. You can block youshouldknow (the community), but you cannot block all of lemmy.world (the instance). The method in my post allows you to block entire instances.

sp6,

Sort of. Change has-text(@TheInstanceYouWantToBlock) to has-text(ThePhraseYouWantToBlock).

Just note that:

  1. The filter is case-sensitive, and
  2. This will block the post if the phrase is anywhere in the post. So even if the phrase isn't in the title, but is in the post's text body, the OP's username, the community name, etc, it will still be blocked. So blocking "trump" could accidentally block a playingcards post that has "trump card" somewhere in the post body.
sp6,

I found that the "language selection" box was bugged on desktop and wouldn't actually apply my settings, but when I tried it on a mobile browser, it worked and I no longer see really any foreign language posts.

You can double check if it worked by trying to type a post/comment and then hitting the "select language" box. If only your selected languages appear, it worked.

sp6,

Not sure about that. Even if .ml was open to new signups, there are quite a few reasons people would pick .world over it:

  1. .ml goes down more often than .world
  2. .world allows non-nudity NSFW content, while .ml does not allow any NSFW content
  3. A lot of people have concerns about "tankie" ownership of .ml (whether that's true or not), while the owners of .world seem more politically neutral

I got in before signups were closed, and have accounts on both .ml and .world, but have abandoned my .ml account for the above reasons

What video game is an absolute 100/100 in your opinion?

A lot of good options in the highest rated free steam games. Helltaker, Grimm's Hollow, Doki Doki Literature Club, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Project Kat, the Expendabros, Eternal Senia, and the Supper should all run on low-end systems and vary from "enjoyable" to "fantastic," although most are short. I think the longest are Doki and Senia at 4-5hrs, while stuff like The Supper is only 20 minutes.

sp6,

Despite beating over 40 games this year, I still haven't purchased a game that released in 2023. I've just been clearing out my library, and playing free stuff.

Of the free stuff that's come out this year, my favorite has actually been The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, with Pineapple on Pizza being a close second.

Of the games I've beaten this year, Half-Life Alyx wasn't just the best, it's the best game I've ever played and the runner up isn't even close. Although if we're excluding VR, A Short Hike probably takes the cake for best I've played this year.

sp6,

I got the same "spins forever" issue when I tried to make my last comment on my desktop browser. So I took my phone out, opened Jerboa, and tried to comment that way, but ended up getting the response "language_not_allowed". It appears to be this bug: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1015

I finally got it to work by returning to desktop, and when typing my comment, hitting the "select language" dropdown, selecting english, and then posting.

sp6,

The developers have said they will be switching from EAC to FaceIt anti-cheat in the near future, which will completely block Steam Deck and linux. As a fellow Deck user (and desktop linux user), I think controller support is the least of our worries

A tankie is someone who supports authoritarian communism (I believe the term originated from using tanks to suppress protests)

Here's a post showing that the main instance of Lemmy (hosted by the main 2 Lemmy devs) removes any negative posts about the Chinese or Russian governments for "orientalism": https://lemmy.pineapplemachine.com/post/5784

In the comments of that post, you can find one of the devs borderline defending what China is doing to the Uyghurs: https://lemmy.pineapplemachine.com/comment/5950

That same dev has a github repo called "essays on communism": https://github.com/dessalines/essays

I'm pretty sure both of the devs' profile pictures are Fidel Castro too

If you care about the technology behind games, Digital Foundry is fantastic
