Turns out I have lost like all the pictures of myself pre-T I once had, but I wanted to put together something of a transition timeline. One of the last pre-T pictures I had, from my undergrad graduation, and one about 10 years later. This is a shoutout to all my fellow transmascs who can't seem to grow facial hair or sing bass or develop Manly Muscles, HRT notwithstanding. At my most polished, I look like someone's geeky dad, and I'm proud of it.

A still-somewhat-pimply 30-some-year-old white person, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, jeans and rectangular glasses, grins at the camera. A small portion of a tattoo is visible on the top of their chest above their open collar and their arms are at their sides, showing a tattoo of the "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" symbol in the colors of the classic six-stripe rainbow Pride flag on their left forearm.

🎉🐘 Today marks a special day for pdx.sh! It's been a year since we embarked on this journey, growing a diverse and vibrant Mastodon community. From tech talks to cat pics, we've seen it all. But what's next?

Check out my latest blog post as I reflect on our first year, dream up future plans (hint: LLMs and server optimizations), and invite your ideas for our collective growth.

@bh I can only speak for myself, but I don't want any more LLMs in my online life than I already have. "Most interacted with" (which I have mixed feelings about; that tends to lead to controversy-farming and ragemongering to get more attention) isn't really something LLMs are needed for anyway, and I have yet to find a situation where an LLM's predictions of what I would statistically like to see have enriched my life.

Got this vision kicking around in my head of a movie trailer, opening with... probably Elliot Page, saying something like: "they discount us. Sometimes they even forget we exist. [Beat]. It's time we reminded them." And then dramatic music, lots of explosions, etc. to pitch an action flick about a motley of transmascs, non-androgynous enbies, and at least one intersex person of some gender, facing corporations and politicians conservative and liberal alike in a daring and ultimately futile heist

Hey Fediverse! I'm still not vibing with the book I am studying from, and I know there's loads of experts here: recommendations for introductory materials? I'm interested in grokking the paradigm, mainly; syntax and tooling and so forth are not too difficult to pick up, but my interest is in learning how to think in the language.

    @grimalkina as a nonbinary trans man in tech a) I filled this out and b) I am compelled to point out that in tech, trans men are an extreme minority and often overlooked because of a misperception that we enjoy the same level of privilege as cis men do. "Women and nonbinary" is a phrase that always makes me feel... invisible, lesser, unwanted.

    spacelogic,
    @spacelogic@pdx.sh avatar

    @grimalkina @spacelogic then I suggest a term other than "women and nonbinary" would get across who you actually mean better. It's a somewhat... loaded phrase, for a lot of the people I know.

    spacelogic,
    @spacelogic@pdx.sh avatar

    @grimalkina @spacelogic why are trans men's voices not relevant? Why is the smallest minority not a subject of interest? What makes me as a nonbinary person interesting but me as a trans man, who went from being supported as a "girl in STEM" to being explicitly and implicitly excluded from gender-minority groups and spaces, undesirable?

    spacelogic,
    @spacelogic@pdx.sh avatar

    @grimalkina @spacelogic let me back up a little bit. You urged more "women and nonbinary" to take the thing because of a need for diverse voices on a hot topic. People, especially in the industry, often use "women and nonbinary" as a shorthand for "people of marginalized genders" but it also erases trans men, and people who use the term often view nonbinary people as a sort of "women-lite". Are you saying you already got enough trans men but not other marginalized genders?

    I left Twitter in ~2014, and a thing that I learned from cutting that off is that the constant pressure to worry about, and to publicly denounce, all the Bad Things going on in the world is terrible for my mental health. Especially the things that are personal to me.

    I'm imploring you, even if you believe that Nobody Is Talking About This and that you Must Raise Awareness — use a CW. Give your friends the chance to face things that may be more or differently painful for them on their own terms.

    Wildfire season seems to have begun in the Pacific Northwest. In Portland yesterday we had a red flag warning and people shooting off illegal fireworks....

    Smoke in the air is always hard for me, remembering the nightmare fire season in 2020 when my hometown was completely evacuated and we waited every day to find out if it would survive. Seems likely many more towns are going to go through that in the coming years.

    (And most of the fire trackers use Twitter....)

    @ryanhoulihan I find search engines have been less and less useful from about... the previous AI trend, or when they started fuzzy-matching instead of looking for what I actually asked for.

    It's Rainbow Capitalism season, and I'm thinking once again about what that means. Especially with the right gearing up to fight "wokeism" in the form of rainbow logos.

    Because it's true that these things are not enough, that the bigwigs at these companies don't actually care, and that they will turn on us... and it's also true that many of those empty campaigns are, behind the scenes, big victories for queer employees fighting to claim their workplaces as theirs.

    spacelogic,
    @spacelogic@pdx.sh avatar

    Every giant company with a float in a pride parade somewhere represents some local employees — sometimes just one employee! — who worked furiously to get the right people to say it was okay to put the company's name on that event. I know less about the branded products, but I suspect many of them similarly start not with bigwigs saying "let's make something to sell to The Gays" but with the one queer employee saying "hey, my people have money..."

    Kinda want to organize a queer-centric, collectively-owned startup but a) capitalism b) capitalism and c) I don't know what we would make.

    @bh yeah, the trouble with setting up a commune or similar is that you need to bring a certain amount of resources in just to establish it, otherwise you trade one kind of insecurity and poor quality of life for another.

    I don't know. I dream of finding a way of letting my people pay their bills, or not have bills to pay at all, without being dependent on the whims of shareholders or higher-ups, but I don't have ideas for how to make that happen with the kinds of resources any of us have.
