First all the bs with Twitter and Elon, then Reddit having an exodus to Lemmy (not complaining lol), then Twitch. Are we like, in an alternate self healing dimension or something?
Note that they are cashflow negative because of expensive advertising features.
Twitter is pretty cheap to run for base functionality and if you open up dev console and see all of the resources Twitter is requesting its like 90% ad stuff and suggestions.
Every request is tied to some functionality. Databases and storage is laughably cheap these days.
The complex queries and all the overhead features is where the real expense is. Crafting a personal, ad-optimized timelines is what's costing Twitter the most money. The public/subscribed feeds of mastodon are incredibly efficient even on something super slow like ruby on rails.
I went to checkout post.news and it's quite interesting though it's super dead other than being a lazy RSS feed aggregator. The UX is very weak though, I honestly don't understand how one can clone Twitter and make the UX worse.
Instead of links it embeds shit in-app in the most ridiculous way possible. One Wired article costs 50 points which apparently is .5 USD which is a bit hilarious considering the whole Wired subscription is like 5 usd FOR A YEAR and article is available for free 1 search away. Also, centralized news market sounds like an awful idea.
Carlson picked up some of his usual, conspiracy-theory-tinged topics and sympathies to the Russian government in the video, calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “sweaty and rat-like” and suggesting without evidence that Ukraine was responsible for the destruction of a major dam on its territory. He also accused mainstream media outlets of suppressing a claim from a former military officer that the U.S. government has secret knowledge of alien spacecraft.
What an absolute shit-stain of a human being and the saddest part is that he still got over 16M views already.
Where are you getting the USA destroying the Nordstream pipeline evidence? AFAIK that shitty blog post has been debunked a thousand times over and if anything all current evidence leads to Russia doing it.
I feel like we're getting a bit too involved here. With so little evidence either way it's hard to make any reasonable conclusion.
Also note that you should not apply reason to anything Russia does. Much of their strategy is basically the "chaos is a ladder" meme from game of thrones.
Straight male though I'd like to think I'm pansexual. I honestly don't see why anyone could not be compatible with someone just because of biological gender in an ideal world. People are pretty awesome.
I disagree. Lemmy is really lacking proper leadership. The current leadership while incredibly skilled and well intentioned really sucks at leading a project like this which is mostly because of their extreme political stances.
That being said, good riddance in this case. It's perfectly fine to miss out on some people and every instance has it's own right to moderate itself however it wants.
Man I really don't want Apple leading any new industry. I'm team Quest here. Say what you want but Quest devices have been a million times more open than anything Apple has put out ever. This seems like a very bad thing for the VR ecosystem :(
Honestly, I don't think even Apple can get close to the value of Quest line. Quest 3 is going to be 7 times cheaper and have the same capabilities with added value of existing ecosystem. Could this be the first real failed product in a while?
Quest 3 is a very much mixed reality headset too. Have you seen the announcement? It also features hand tracking since first Quest release that has been constantly worked on.
Yeah the virtual monitor seems like an amazing use case though the resolution of quest 2 or quest pro is already good enough so the real challenge is the ergonomics of having something on your head for extended period of time. Ergonomics isn't Apples strong suit either lol
Glad to see so many subreddits contributing to this. Reddit IPO is the worst thing that happened to it and the original founders would have never allowed reddit to get to this point.
The thing is that people would gladly play 2-5usd/mo to keep 3rd party clients but Reddit is making super difficult on purpose. No way they are getting 5usd/mo per user from ads.
i'm sure with the influx of people we have enough of a community for this to be a thread, or at least people who are interested in veganism and vegetarianism and incorporating aspects of the diet/lifestyle into their current life. so yeah, pop off! share your struggles, experiences, good times, recipes, all that kind of stuff
I've been vegetarian for 10 years and I'm on a pause now as I live on a super tiny town with no vegetarian restaurants and I don't cook.
I love food but my relationship with it was always practical. If I could never eat again I would. So going vegetarian was a no brainer.
What I noticed after going back to meat for 2 years now is that my health degraded. Though that could be just correlation with simply getting older but the only issue I had while being vegetarian is b12 and iron which was super easy to supplement.
When I lived in Vietnam being vegetarian was so incredibly easy since all Buddhist eat vegetarian and all you had to do to find a good restaurant is to find a temple. It really gave me a taste how vegetarian first society would feel and it's amazing and totally doable.
I'm excited to move to civilization to resume being vegetarian that's for sure.
I've been racing as Wario ever since MK64. I love being a powerhouse on the racetrack! In the original SNES Mario Kart, since I don't have Wario, Bowser is my backup. It's good to be big...
Haven't read anything in a while now as I'm just collecting material on Blinkist. It's an app service that summarizes popular books in a few bullet points or short audio covers and it's brilliant!
Oh I'm flipping through "What If ? 2" on my coffee table and still have few scenarios left. Such a fun read and it's surprisingly educational despite being completely unrealistic.
Seems like foldable phones are taking over (e.g. Motorola Razr making waves) and only Apple is missing an entry in this form factor now. Almost everyone who can afford one swears by it with the exception of weak build quality....
Yeah, the 1700$ price tag on pixel foldable making me feel like it might take a while to get this down. I sure hope that 1500+ usd is not the flagship reality now. I think it'll take one mid-range foldable to break this pricing standard though.
People swear it's not that noticable but I honestly don't believe it. I change my screen protection once it gets scraches as it's just too distracting.
Why do you think they are too expensive? I'm of a blief that phones are already extensions of ours and at 1000 USD it's still an absolute steal for the value it provides.
it's very much borrowed from one of the reddit subs i frequent(ed) often, but the idea is to share what we're playing weekly and hopefully create discussions around those games (or simply have a sort of "check-in").
I'm quite happy with my current setup but ive been getting lucky with draws so I'll definitely give silver wolf a shot as I've got loads of crystals from the main missions / battle pass.
There's just so much content I'm trying to get through that I'm still working on my party. I really dig thr simulated world stuff feels like a rogue like with a lot of replay value.
Really well made game which makes you wonder how much better or worse itd be if it was a full feature game not a gacha.
My girlfriend and I are taking a week off at the end of this month to start our coop campaign! My only fear is that it feels a bit too mmo as we want to keep to ourselves rather than wait in some dungeon group queues.
Yeah apparently some bosses need a party of several people. I'm trying to avoid spoilers and stuff so I didn't look into it too much so don't take my word for it tbh just something I saw people complain about in the beta threads.
Seriously, what's up with big sites literally dying as we speak?

Who is your go-to character in Mario Kart? (beehaw.org)

What are you reading? (June 2023)
Hey Beehaw, whatcha reading right now?
What do you think of foldable phones?

what are you playing this week?

Anyone here getting Diablo 4?
If so what class do you plan on playing? I'm probably either going to go Necro or Rogue. I'm leaning more towrds Necro though.
