Journey home is not going well. Eurostar is on strike, no trains running today at all. Looks like I shall not be home until tomorrow.

Welcome to the Day 11 thread

I’m in Czechia currently and I’m heading back into Germany today

@jon Small world, looks like we're both taking trains between DE and CZ today. I've just got to Dresden from Prague

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@jon I can recommend the bratwurst at the cafe opposite the station when you get here

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@jon OK, probably not the most useful food tip you've had this week then, I'll grant you

Well bollocks. My first train today was cancelled, and the second train of my backup plan was late, so I have now missed train 3 of my backup plan.

Implementing backup plan 2, which should still get me to Prague this evening, just 1 h later than planned. Could have been worse I guess.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

Now implementing backup plan 3, though on the plus side it should still get me to Prague at the same time as backup plan 2.

If I make my 11 minute connection at Cheb, that is.

statsguy,

Happy to say I made the connection at Cheb. Now sitting on an actual train to Prague.

Boy am I going to need a beer when I get there

@EU_Commission Greetings from the UK. Many of us here are already very well aware of the benefits of EU membership :(

Sounds fun though. Hope it all goes well.

It will be very interesting to see what effect the new voter suppression law has. Honestly I wouldn't like to predict how big the effect will be.

We know that millions of people have now been disenfranchised. But we also know that millions of people don't vote anyway. If there's a big enough overlap between those 2 groups, maybe it won't make as much difference as the Tories are hoping it will.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

It should be pretty straightforward to figure out what effect it's had.

  1. Get data on the turnout in each ward in today's election.

  2. Get data on the turnout for the most recent previous local election in the same ward

  3. Calculate the change in turnout in each ward

  4. Get data on the index of multiple deprivation in each ward

  5. Look at the correlation between 3 and 4.

I do hope some enterprising data journalist is going to do that.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

I'd do it myself if I had the time, but sadly I don't think I'll have the time to do it any time soon.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@MetalSamurai Yes indeed, and even if you can't see an effect this time doesn't mean we won't see one at the GE

Morning all.

If you're in the UK, and there's an election in your area, and if you're still allowed to vote, don't forget to vote today! Whoever you vote for, it's really important to go out and have your voice heard.

And don't forget to take your ID.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@Camilo @oblomov Voting would work just fine if people bothered to do it. Democracy doesn't work because too many people don't bother.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@Camilo @oblomov Oh, and if we had a better voting system. FPTP sucks.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@oblomov @Camilo I feel very pessimistic about the chances of anything like that happening in the UK.

We had an actual referendum on it back in 2011, and the fairer voting system was rejected by a mahoosive majority.

Weirdly, most people seem to prefer an antidemocratic system.

A few protests aren't going to change that.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@oblomov @Camilo Oh, absolutely. The French would never put up with the kind of crap that the UK is getting up to
