@statsguy
I just can't get past the shitty lines, I know they are supposed to look like music lines but they make the thing unusable and they didn't even do a treble clef
I've noticed that several websites where I've been happily using 2FA with them sending me an SMS message for years seem to want me to switch to using an authenticator app instead.
Is that really more secure? How? And if so, is that level of security realistically needed for anything a normal person might do except banking?
@statsguy Personnally i use freeotp+ for "one time passwords" like this, unless there is a specific app to use for the service, as this one is open sources and allows me to export my config in a file to save securely somewhere, in case my phone is stolen or lost (because yes, it can be a big problem if you lose your phone).
Good grief. Whenever I think British politics is fucked up beyond repair, I see that someone from across the pond is standing there saying "hold my beer".
What next: are they going to ban hand washing? Condoms? Seat belts in cars?
What science is this policy based on, masks are not just for covid, the work quite well for hayfeaver, and i think to some extent protect from air pollution. They also help prevent spreading of air borne viruses.
Happy to be corrected IF wrong, but this ban on masks just seems very unscientific.
We're often told that the reason bosses of big companies get multimillion pound salaries and bonuses is because they have very rare and valuable talent.
I'm not convinced that not having the first clue WTF is going on in your own organisation is all that rare a talent. I have come across plenty of people who can do that.
Unless of course he's lying through his teeth. That probably can't be entirely ruled out.
@statsguy the reason for those multi-million dollars of salary I guess technically is that the buck stops with these guys and if the company fucks up its on their head.
Yeah, sure. As if anyone of those guys ever had to deal with the consequences of their ineptitude.
That's nice, but come back and talk to me again about a healthy economy when all the food banks have given up and gone home because no-one needs them any more.
There is more to a healthy economy than GDP growth.
Can anyone recommend a good alternative to TripIt for keeping track of travel plans?
I've been very happy with TripIt and found it invaluable when travelling, but sadly they've withdrawn the version of the Android app that works with my phone.
@statsguy Sorry, rarely get to travel, so never have plans...even the nature holiday we tried to book is on hold, because not enough people have booked!
Not having a go at the conference organisers (who are paying my expenses), they have a finite budget and I think are quite reasonable in not paying an expenses bill that is far higher than it needs to be.
It just really bothers me that we've organised society in such a way that flying is so much cheaper than going by train. This really has to stop.
In a sane world, the Official Opposition party would be making an almighty fuss about this.
But we have #Starmer. I imagine his attitude to the deliberate starvation of vulnerable people will be much the same as it is for pretty much everything else this appalling Tory government does: just quietly nodding along.
If he's going to take Putin's side, then he should butt out of international affairs and go back to protecting paedophile priests or whatever his day job is.
WTF was anyone thinking letting a former MP who was kicked out of Parliament in disgrace conduct official government business, even if he did get his Russian oligarch mates to pay for the trip?
OK European rail experts (looking at you @jon@seatsixtyone), in May I need to travel from London to Valencia, arriving in Valencia no later than about 4 pm on a Tuesday, and I'd really like to avoid flying if I can.
One option would be to go to Barcelona on the Monday, which is doable, but that is quite a long day.
Another option would be leaving on Sunday and overnight stops in Paris and Barcelona, but 2 overnight stops is also not ideal.
@jon@seatsixtyone The Lyon-Barcelona route looks like it has potential. Staying overnight in Lyon is no good, as the earliest train from there won't get me to Barcelona until about 4.30 pm. But they go via Nimes, and there is a train from Nimes that looks like it might do the job.
Thanks!
Now I just have to work out if getting to Nimes on day one is any easier then getting to Barcelona...
@statsguy@seatsixtyone It’ll likely be cheaper to stay in Nimes, Béziers, Narbonne or Perpignan, and possibly even in Montpellier, than staying in Barcelona. And Trainline is probably your best bet for bookings, as it has all the French and all the Spanish operators in its search.
