How to design accessible forms in 10 steps?

  • break long form into smaller ones
  • provide a label for each field
  • use text hint instead of placeholders for format and help
  • use HTML5 native form controls when possible
  • highlight elements on focus (and make sure the color of the focus follows WCAG standards too)
  • help users recover from error with good styling and error messages

Next time someone asks "why don't you sell your stuff on Etsy/a site", send them to me, and I'll infodump how it's hours of administrative nightmare with people who don't read questions, can't provide understandable answers and send you 80 pages of European directives.

stephaniewalter,
@stephaniewalter@front-end.social avatar

Sorry, I'm annoyed, but administrative stuff feels like playing a game, where none is able to explain the rules to you, but you will still get punished if you didn't follow them properly, even if none is willing to explain them to you in a non-cryptic way.

New to Figma? You might need this nice tutorial that covers all you need to know about Figma variables, from type, to how to create, use them, organizing with groups and collections, how to prototype with them and more.

How many times do you press the walk signal call button? Do you press it repeatedly, or is once enough? It all comes down to your mental model of how the system works.
Understanding user mental model is important for designing user friendly interfaces. To measure and analyze them, you can use methods like think-aloud protocols, retrospective interviews, a series of what-if questions, or even methods like relatedness ratings, card sorting and pathfinder networks.

And, in case you wonder, I'm a "I know I should press online once, but when it takes forever to get green I put my frustration on that button and press it multiple times" kind of person.

I don’t know who needs those abstract shapes with cool grainy gradient, but, they do look very, very cool indeed. You can copy paste the SVG, JSX code, download SVG and PNG, or open them in Figma.

Looking for an interesting way to share findings with research participants? You could use graphic recordings. I also like that it's a non-digital artifact.

Yes, yet another AI color palette generator , but I kind of like that to you change manually change some colors, ask it to refine it, and get some inspiration of what it could look like.

Current work in progress: my accessibility for designers checklist grew, a lot. So, I'm preparing a mini one, that with a summary of the bare minimum designers could do. Trying to fit this into a A4 is, a challenge. But, also, very interesting since it forces me to get to the "what's the minimum and most important things designers can do". I'm not saying this is all we should do of course, but, it's a baseline to build upon.

@stephaniewalter@front-end.social avatar

If you previously got the checklist from my shop (https://shop.stephaniewalter.design/b/accessibility-interactions-designer-checklist-annotation-kit), you shall get an update soon, with this new A4 cheatsheet.

Freepik launched a Figma plugin that gives you access to their whole library, directly from your design tool. I like that you can choose the level of background details and can easily recolor them.

It’s not wrong. But it’s not right, either.

“Creating Fluid Typography with the CSS clamp() Function”
https://www.sitepoint.com/fluid-typography-css-clamp-function/#:~:text=setting%2016px%20(or%20whatever%20value%20you%20want)%20as%20the%20root%20font%20size

It is, however, nice to see that my advocating for less broken fluid type approaches has paid off, even if the handwavy ‘accessibility’ explanations don’t point to my post that first raised them. It’s cool, it’s only my ego (and detailed explanations with examples).

What if... I put mica powder into stickers? Well, I would say it kind of works when you go for neurochaotic space look?
Also, I can't decide if I prefer text with semi blended mode (1st) or not (2nd) from my MVPs

Purple pepper sticker with the text Neurochaotic not blended with the background
The 2 stickers side by side, not blended on top, blended on the bottom
Workstation with uncut stickers and some mica powder being applied

How Disabled People Get Exploited to Build the Technology of War.
A long and super insightful read by Liz Jackson and Rua Williams on how assistive technologies developed for disabled individuals are repurposed for military use, often without their consent or knowledge. Under the cover of inclusive design methodologies, disabled people get exploited in the development of technologies like prosthetics and speech recognition, which ultimately serve militaristic agendas.

Project announcement incoming! I'm happy to announce that @Myriam and I launched Neurospicy. It's an agency, a boutique consultancy and a project dedicated to neurodiversity - all rolled up into one.

It's still a MVP, but the idea is to have a place to offer different content around neurodiversity, including training, socks, and stickers. I have no idea where this is going, and honestly, this is the most fun part, dopamine rush?
