I wonder what will come out first, visionOS 2.0 or dark mode for Things.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@dan Oh, dark mode for Things on visionOS… I was very confused as Mac/iOS had dark mode for years…

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@dan I guess they can’t see their code editor to implement it?

Hey friends - when do you recommend use of a roving tab index? When do you say proceed with caution, and when is definitely not appropriate?

Having some discussions where the sentiment from others is it can be "an accelerator" for getting though a "collection" but I'm not finding evidence for that recommendation vs allowing normal tab behavior outside of tabs or custom radio-type groups.

(Not so secretly hoping this nerd-snipes some of you into a blog post 👀)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@hi_mayank @5t3ph That’s basically where I stand as well. Useful in very limited ways, 99% list boxes, to be honest.

That’s why I’m so sceptical by the idea of Open UI to make roving tabindex easy as an attribute. This will create so much inconsistency when people will use it for their main navigation, for example: https://open-ui.org/components/focusgroup.explainer/

What's the German word for “It's so fun watching @lexfri speedrun all the awful things that Apple puts you through as a third-party developer”?

#KI 🤷‍♂️

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

Klingt langweilig.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

Vielleicht in 20 Jahren.

One thing I noticed on the VW ID.3:
The power consumption is quoted in “kWh/h” (kilowatt-hours per hour), which offends my scientific brain.

It’s just kilowatts, surely?

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@matthew On Volkswagen.co.uk it seems to be quoted as “14.9kWh/62 miles”, the relation to a distance makes sense and is usually what you see with electric cars.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@matthew Yes, that’s basically horse power, and I have never seen that referred in kWh/h but only in kW? Weird!

Oof, wondering what to do about my site settings.

I'm using the :has CSS selector to enable different page styles based on input elements being checked. This lets me create options like manually setting light/dark theme instead of following the OS/browser setting.

Using JavaScript, I also save the input elements' value to local storage in a way where I can sync them across the site.

But I'm not sure how to display them. Or whether to display them.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@sarajw @cvennevik I just write the values in local storage using JavaScript. The settings panel is in a native dialog.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@cvennevik @sarajw Feel free to look at my code if you want. (It’s not very good or documented 😂)

For me the setting on the site is a progressive enhancement over the OS setting that I also respect. You preference might be different of course.

Just rewatched Sweden’s Eurovision entry, which has a lot of strobing lights and flashing with i(Pad)OS’ Dim Flashing Lights setting turned on. It’s very interesting how this setting can compensate somewhat for the flashing but also clearly misses the mark sometimes.

(And of course it would be better if there were no strobing lights or flashes in the first place.)

Power bricks have far more utility (and yes, more plastic) than stickers, but we were told to get over losing the bricks in iPhone boxes. Now, the pundit class has a collective sad over stickers. Deal with it, boys.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

Plus the new charger has to be produced, which uses plastic and resources. The packaging gets bigger, which means you can ship x% less phones per volume. Less phones per volume means more environmental impact per phone for transport.

This impact quickly adds up when you produce/ship hundreds of thousands of units.

Buying a charger only when needed is a positive. (2/2)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@Rich @Shelly @pixelate If you buy a phone to replace a phone, you can use the charger of the previous phone. You have one charger. If a charger is in the box, touch now have two chargers for one phone. One charger ends up in electronics recycling (I hope we’re past the point of throwing electronics into landfills). (1/2)

New blog post: "Best intention barriers (ARIA edition)"

In my experiences as an auditor (for WCAG and EN 301 549) I stumble over a large number of barriers. Heck, my job is to find and to help the website developer and owner to get rid of them to make their web project more inclusive and – in the truest sense of the word - accessible. But there is a certain type of barrier that are more, well, tragic than others.

I feel guilty because Polypane is still on Chromium 122, two versions behind current. I'm blocked by an Electron bug and it feels like I'm falling behind.

The most up-to-date competitor just now updated their Chromium to ...120 (which came out Dec 2023)

Maybe I fret too much.
