An appearance of solidarity with a government committing colonialist genocide. Just what I want to see from my municipal government /s 🤮

When I think of Tim Hortons, I think of how I’ve seen the disappearance of reusable flatware and cutlery from such a large proportion of eating establishments, and the normalization of eating-in with exclusively single-use disposable stuff (usually plastic), in about two decades. Future generations will thank us /s. But it’s those effing ‘woke lids’ that are the real problem /s. Also, who cares about Tim Hortons if you don’t like it; it’s not even Canadian. Do conservative voters just need a daily dose of misplaced resentment and rage to keep them going?

Paper straws do suck though.

I’m in Toronto, and I believe the city has banned plastic straws. I think plastic straw bans tend to be harmfully distracting from the larger issues. (To be clear, I think we have a massive plastic pollution problem.)

I was in a Hawaiian cocktail bar in Toronto recently, where the drinks are made to be drunk with straws and half of the people at the table asked for a second straw halfway through their drinks as the paper straws had stopped working well

We should be selling and marketing bring-your-own reusable plastic straws, with a small washable traveling case and a cleaning brush, maybe 4-packs

I think that is a really American thing though. I have never been to a place that had plastic cutlery and single use flatware.

Interesting! Care to provide your province and urban/rural? I live in downtown Toronto and unless there’s waiter-to-table service, there’s nothing reusable except glassware in bars and potentially plastic cups for free water. Other Torontonians, please chime in if you’ve seen anything different. Most places don’t ask “to stay or to go?” any more, or if they do the only difference is a bag

How disappointing and shameful. It’d be nice to see our country on the right side of history

TTC can be very frustrating at times. 30 minutes stuck on a train between stations is dreadful. I hope you never experience that again and future commutes are better

An “an anonymous source says” article (i.e., deliberate leak to the press; standard sports industry practice). Toronto, the WNBA’s 14th franchise, is expected to start play May 2026 and play at Coca-Cola Coliseum, an 8,000-seat arena at Toronto’s CNE grounds which is home to the Marlies and where Toronto’s Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise is currently playing its first playoff series. An official announcement is expected May 23rd

Community moderation and discussion

Greetings Blue Bird aficionados. We seem to be without our good friend and moderator, @imasnyper, this season. I’m thinking I might ask the lemmy.ca admins if they’ll add me as moderator to this community, as I’d like to update it and have it look more active. It might take me a while to figure out how Snyper set up the...

Move George down in the lineup! They should definitely do it. I think they will do it eventually, and perhaps they’ll do it soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do it to start the series with the Twins

LOL! Thanks for that, Grant. It’s nice to get a laugh in after a 10-1 Blue Jays loss

I think you’re onto something.

Many commentators don’t see this as a new season, but as an extension of last season as the hitting issues are largely the same as last year’s. Re: changes to hitting coaches, they sent 1 coach (Dave Hudgens) down to AAA and they promoted Don Mattingly from bench coach to offensive coordinator.

I think either Blair or Barker mentioned this. Hitters who’ve just joined the Jays seem to perform pretty well compared to hitters who’ve been with the organization a while. Top 3 hitters by OPS+ ranked 1, 2, 3 (min 2 plate appearances per team games played): 2024: Davis Schneider, Justin Turner, Daulton Varsho (who was ice cold until he started working with his ex-MLB dad this season) 2023: Brandon Belt, Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jays hitters suffer from two much information, which as Barker points out may be even more unhelpful when you’re already struggling (and prone to over-thinking). (We also know Vladdy is calling all sorts of hitting coaches outside of the organization; Bo’s been working with his ex-MLB dad lately.)

Watching the Phillies last night was something. They seem to have a simpler, see ball-hit ball approach. They pull soft, they push hard to the opposite field. Rough outing for Berríos.

First off: @#$% off, Ford. Second, this continues a trend we’ve seen most prominently under the clown show that is Danielle Smith’s UCP in Alberta: Provincial governments wanting to dictate municipal affairs according to their own political agenda, which I don’t think is healthy for Canadian cities

Timestamp: The “Disappointing new Harbourfront Plaza” is at 40:13.

It’s a hockey rink-sized concrete-brick patio with some greyscale variety in stone colour to create visual appeal.

It’s described by the narrator as the cheapest possible replacement for a skating rink that’d fallen into disrepair due to inadequate maintenance. He says that fairs/festivals could make good use of the space but there’s a lack of greenery. He concurs with an anonymous redditor’s description of it as a useless grey concrete space.

I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed. Some more greenery would be nice. But I think it pretty practical. It sounds like there’s a shortage of funds to invest in the space and I hope it is used for many community events

You’re welcome :P Another good strategy is just don’t fret about approval ratings before half a day has gone by. And thanks for contributing to the Lemmy vegan community <3

You rock, Kevin! Thank you.

They actually nest in trees!

That’s super unexpected based on their feet. I’d guess there’s an interesting adaptation story there. I love your b-side photos! I agree with you that the female is also beautiful in a more subtle way

I won’t downvote but I will say that I personally don’t think unfounded discriminating/stereotyping against nationalities or continents is desirable in a vegan community

streetfestival,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

there are hundreds of years of documented history confirming that the discrimination against the Fr×nch is entirely warranted in 99 cases out of 100.

Care to enlighten me a bit? One thing I like about the French is that they’re usually quite willing to take to the streets for social revolution. When anti-Black racism was really prevalent in the US in the 20th century (eg, 1960s), Black people were treated much better in France than the US as far as I understand it. France a history of inhumane colonization, like many of the other big players in Europe. That’s my dossier on France at the moment (I guess I’d add that modern English borrowed many cool words from the French language too)

I agree with and know that a lot of what you said is correct. For me, it’s just much easier to supplement omega-3 than it is restrict omega-6 across my entire diet. That convenience is really valuable to me. I do a generous tablespoon of ground chia seeds stirred in water daily for my omega-3s, as opposed to a capsule.

Also, if you’re a vegan, there are somethings you should probably take via supplements, B12 being the most notorious example; pretty much every vegan (and many omnis) should take B12 supplements. (B12 is produced by bacteria and doesn’t occur in plants.) Being supplement-wise is important as a vegan. There are a lot of scams out there, but avoiding supplements altogether is ill-advised and in the case of B12 likely deleterious to one’s health.

Edit: There aren’t citations to this but the reasoning is pretty sound; for anyone interested in more discussion about the value of supplementation for vegans (they’re pro): philosophicalvegan.com/…/Natural_vs_Supplementati…
