Toronto already has some of the worst traffic in the world, and with construction season here, delays will be even more “unacceptable.” What’s the solution?
Making public transit an attractive option to reduce the number of vehicles on the streets definitely helps in many scenarios.
I don’t work in construction, and don’t have any special knowledge therein. My observation has been that usually construction projects spanning more than a day are only worked on during business hours, unless it’s an emergency like power outage, but the infrastructure is always unusable (e.g., outside of business hours). I wonder, at least in select cases, wouldn’t it be better to have 2 or 3 shifts, work around the clock, and complete the job sooner and minimize dead-time
For years, cable TV has bled viewers and subscribers to streaming giants like Netflix, Apple and Amazon. Now, those same companies are vying to stream live sports, one of the last lines of defence when it comes to audiences paying big bucks for traditional cable packages....
amazon also purchased a huge stake in NBA (men’s basketball) TV rights for the next decade last week. Becoming players in the pro sports market seems like a key step in streaming services becoming the new cable (eg, you pay and there are ads)
About a week after Canadian doctor Yipeng Ge returned from Gaza, he got several surprise emails: legal and human rights groups were getting in touch to take his witness testimony....
Canadian doctors returned from Gaza almost certainly won’t be killed on Canadian soil for speaking out, but there’s a high likelihood they’ll face professional consequences from hospitals (ie, employers) or their college (ie, professional organization). They’ll probably be safer if they work at a community hospital/practice than a university-associated hospital.
I’ve found it troubling to see how the targeting of healthcare workers, women and children, and aid groups by the Israeli government in their ‘war’/genocide has been completely ignored by the establishment - at least within the university and child health circles that I travel in - for the sake of demonstrating at least an appearance of staunch commitment to the delusion that Israel is not committing colonialist genocide. I wouldn’t dare say something in real life, or challenge abstract references to the “protest” on campus. I’m in a more precarious than secure spot in terms of job and security, and it’s a matter of survival right now.
I applaud the house owners around me that display “ceasefire now” signs on their lawns. And I applaud these physicians, if they’re able, to supporting international justice with their testimony
You make some good points. I wonder if their testimony for ICJ or a similar body would be as protected as if it was for Canadian legal proceedings. Regarding termination, fabrication of ‘patient safety’ concerns can be used to disguise motivations and minimize due process when there’s a desire to fire someone. Sorry if I sound wildly pessimistic. It’s the most 1984 thing I’ve experienced personally, and I’ve got to put up with it for several more years before I’ll be empowered to stop hiding as much
Without knowing Israel’s political landscape, I’m inclined to agree, but I don’t think ‘a referendum on our policies’ is part of the right-wing playbook

Since the start of Ottawa’s $10-a-day program, Sandra Christian has had many families leave her private child-care centre in B.C. for a spot in a subsidized centre....
With greedflation these days, one’s hardpressed to buy lunch for $10. People who are in a position to buy a second property being eligible for such hugely subsidized daycare is nuts imo
Fair enough. I’m pro supporting families myself. I’m against wealthy people helping themselves to things intended for working class families. It sounds like the government didn’t put the necessary checks and balances in place to ensure the subsidies go to those who need them
Taxpayer dollars going back to taxpayers (and increasing their living conditions) instead of corporate executives and shareholders of businesses that are destroying our planet and causing all sorts of problems for us and other living creatures?! What a radical idea. I’m all for it

That skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US and yet a dumb almost 100-year old rule means that Americans have less effective sunscreen - a key cancer prevention tool - than many other countries is pretty wild. Do any of the industrial/governmental players involved actually care about reducing cancer risk in their population?
I agree with your answer. People who are sick or have chronic conditions are lifelong customers. There’s one version of corporate regulation and paternalism for tobacco, and all other industries get a free pass to drum up business I’d say
