I have spent the last several months planning and now building myself a deck.

Here’s a live look at the inside of my brain right now.

Here we go 😬

Deck is coming along. Trying my best to not get too hung up on details, but I am pleased that the first joist is level 😮‍💨

A close up of the large level with the bubble in the center. I knew it was going to be good, but it was still a big relief haha

The deck is complete for now. Still need to build stairs around two sides, and figure out some better furniture than this “couch” 😄

Other angle of the deck. That right edge is still hanging off long and will be trimmed clean when I do the rest of the finish work. I am very tired.

If I start drawing a bike I’m definitely staying up too late 😴

You guys should check out this band called Paramore.

They're very good.

@hotdogsladies I got way into Paramore playing along to the (often amazing) drum parts. Right around 2:30 in this song is nuts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7nmB20qJv4

If I get one more email from a design tool telling me about AI I'm going to become the joker

I have a kinda small electric chainsaw and it’s still the scariest tool I own 🪵

When I don’t know what to draw, I start by just drawing some shapes for a while until it looks like something.

Question for my Blender homies, I import a canoe, export it as a USD file, but when I try to use that on Apple platforms/RealityKit, it loads without any textures, even though it has them in the Finder preview. Why?

File: https://christianselig.com/canoe.usdc

A canoe without any texture floating in a living room in the visionOS simulator
A screenshot of code, where a RealityView is created, and a ModelEntity with a file named "canoe.usdc" is created, then added to the scene

@ambiguousname @christianselig @mark Yep – I opened the canoe usdz and the normals on the main body are flipped. You can turn on Face Orientation from the viewport overlay menu.

@martincrownover @christianselig Yep – I was just going to say that Recalculate Outside is great, but then theres one inner piece that's still flipped.

Now when you select that inner piece with L it should just select the remaining flipped normals. Otherwise you can flip open the Select Linked thing in the lower left and make sure that's set to Normal. Then flip that last piece and you're set 👍

@christianselig @martincrownover Yeah I'm not sure what's going on in canoe2.blend – looks like all of the meshes got mangled together somehow? (I pulled them apart in the screenshot)

The original mesh in canoe.blend was way cleaner and easy to fix the normals on. I uploaded the fixed version: https://stublag.com/misc/canoe_1_fixed.blend

@martincrownover @christianselig Just to add to this:

  1. When I imported the included obj in the source folder, all of the materials were hooked up & applied to the correct pieces of the mesh.

  2. The top material is the metal parts – so in that material I could turn up Metallic & turn down Roughness to get it to look shinier. I'm not sure if this is helpful when you go to export it for what you're doing though.

Yesterday while driving home I was marveling at all of the skyways in Minneapolis. The entire system spans 9.5 miles! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minneapolis_Skyway_System

At this point I’m only some cargo shorts and Adidas slip-ons away from becoming a grandpa.

Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what’s going on with the limbs in a doodle.
