Box cutters are elusive creatures. Cloths hangers and socks are rank amateurs in comparison.

This is a sign of dedication. Yours is the superior count.

If you can always find it, one is plenty!

Milwaukee makes an excellent version, which is the only one I’ll buy anymore. But the Stanley steel utility knife is an iconic classic! I remember finding those around my grandfather’s Arco gas station.

Mine like to migrate to different drawers when I’m not looking.

In my house, if they’re not carefully hidden around the house, they’re (a) never handy, and (b) prone to getting relocated such that they’re (a) not handy.

@sxan@midwest.social avatar

I often do too, but my wife doesn’t carry one, and if I’m breaking down a lot of boxes, I find that a utility knife does a better job.

sxan,

Is it a Milwaukee?

sxan,

A sane number for a person not prone to misplacing their box cutters!

A.K.A. utility knife. One of those knives with replaceable blades.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Oh. Oh my. So, when a blade gets dull, you don’t replace the blade… you replace the whole knife? That’s some next-level utility knifing!

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Ceramic blades are nice for keeping an edge. Do you find it durable enough for the rough use it must get?

I eventually started buying more expensive carbide blades - they last far longer than regular steel, and I worry less about chipping.

I use the utility knives for cutting down boxes, because sharpening knives is not my favorite passtime and cutting cardboard is so hard on an edge. However, like you I’ll use most of my pocket knives to cut open boxes and will use them to cut them down if necessary. The only thing I won’t use for boxes is kitchen knives.

Drywall, on the other hand: I would never use a pocket knife for. It’s just not worth it.

Always a knife at hand, for host or guest!

They’re not lost, they’re just surprise knives for future you.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Oh! A professional utility-knifer!

Did you have a problem with sticky-fingered co-workers?

sxan,

The recycling people would appreciate it as well. Not that they’d ever do anything, but our recycling company requires boxes to be cut down.

Help back up the Great 78 Collections before the Record Companies force The Internet Archive to take them down! (yiffit.net)

See linked posting. I’ve commented there with a link to a CLI tool in Python that allows downloading of IA collections. I’ve submitted a patch to enable specifying start and end points so that it’s easier to resume downloading a huge collection, or to allow multiple people to split up the work....

In this case, the media was withdrawn for (arguably) good reasons: the representations were deemed hurtful or harmful.

Good reasons or bad, they still stand as stark examples of how media can disappear at the whims of a single organization.

Say what? Now I’m curious how they handled the slavery topic, and found actors for it.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I'm sorry if this isn't allowed, I know this is a picture place primarily but, I have a question

So, last night, my neutered, 5 year old boy cat just started howling and acting weird. I have 0 idea why. Other than, maybe he saw/smelled another cat last night that set him off? Idk. Has anyone else had this kind of a problem? Should I take him to a vet? He doesn’t seem to have a problem with me touching him anywhere but...

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar
  1. Is he peeing normally? If you suspect he’s not peeing, or is having trouble peeing, take him to the vet immediately.
  2. Is he drinking water normally? If he’s not drinking water, take him to the vet immediately.
  3. Is he eating normally?

If he’s doing those three things, it’s probably OK to observe him for a couple of days and see how it develops. If he keeps it up, I’d take him to the vet.

We once had a cat that inexplicably started yowling in the middle of the night. Did not appear to be in any distress, but would not stop. In the morning, we discovered that a water heater had burst and we had 6" of water in the basement - where her litter box was. We’ve had them begin yowling at night, because they’d “caught” their toy and were letting everyone know how great a hunter they were. We’ve certainly had them yell when they caught scent of another cat through the window. Once, we had once start every night, the same time… turns out we had racoons visiting the porch, and our cat did not like the looks of them at all, even through the glass sliders. But, once, we had one take up yowling and prowling at night, and that turned out to be lukemia.

The peeing thing is super important; beyond that, most things that have no obvious injury, you can observe for a couple of days.

All good points. Also, it’s hella cheaper, plus also avoids the risk of someone with a cellphone capturing your SAM launch on video.

    I have only had positive experiences with B2; I don’t even keep an eye on competitor prices any longer. I hope their employees are getting decent raises out of it.
