A decade ago (almost!) I had one of those HP swivel-screen jobs - a Compaq TC4200. Replaceable battery, dock, external attachable battery, resistive touch screen, fully user-serviceable… it was the best laptop I’ve ever had, in terms of feature set.

People often claim they don’t make 'em like they used to, but it’s true. Framework is a step in the right direction with servicability, but they still have a way to go to get to everything laptops of a decade ago.

Been there. But, while I have a preference for statically compiled languages with minimal runtime-linked libraries, when it comes to GUIs, the horses are already out of the barn, right? So I don’t sweat it as much for software I’m getting from the distribution’s repos.

I’m always on the lookout for something like this. tmsu is pretty close, but have you found anything better? There’s a paupacy of software for Linux in this space, and I don’t understand why.

No we don’t. Biden, and the fucking Republicans, do. I don’t know if it’s even a majority anymore who support the war crimes Israel is perpetrating, but popular support is rapidly dwindling in the US.

    I agree with the Kobo recommendation. They’re great devices. However, OP specifically mentioned azw3, which is Amazon’s format, right? You’re not going to be reading eBooks from Amazon on a Kobo. Your choices are DRM-free ebooks, or books from Kobo’s serviceable, but kind of crappy, store. Also, in most cases, pdfs are going to be practically unreadable on any Kobo; you need something more in the format of a reMarkable to get usable pdf on an e-ink device. PDF was another requirement.

    He isn’t, but he beat Trump once already. He may not see anyone in the Democratic field that he trusts to win. It’s his decision to run or not; he’s going to follow what he thinks is the best course to deny Trump a second presidency. Not running means he has no control over the outcome.

    In his place, would you roll those dice?

    Patent time: Schmidt’s shaving brush container (wegianwetshaving.com)

    Continuing on the theme of antiseptic and hygienic shaving brushes, today we have George A Schmidt’s shaving brush container. Schmidt held several patents, most of them on soap dispensers. So it is perhaps not a big surprise that his shaving brush container was also meant to contain some of his own antiseptic soap....

    It’d have to be antiseptic soap. My first thought looking at this was: “oh, look: a petri dish.”

    God of War Creator Is Unhappy With New Games and Kratos' Story (comicbook.com)

    Despite being nominated for numerous awards and even winning Game of the Year in 2018, the creator of God of War, David Jaffe, is not a huge fan of the new direction the series has gone in. Jaffe himself hasn't worked on these new God of War games, but thinks that they're not staying true to the spirit of the character and the...

    A less fussy version: mix any yoghurt and any hard cereal like Grapenuts. If you want fruit, get pre-fruited yoghurt.

    My dad, blue-collar, single father, used to make this for his breakfast before work. It’s simple, fast, cheap, as sweet as you prefer, reasonably available in food deserts, and holds up well over time if you can’t eat it immediately (it gets soggy more slowly).

    If you have money and want to get precious about it, you can use hand-mixed granola and skyr, but all you really need is Grapenuts and yoghurt.

    You know what this country needs? More sectarian violence. If we really apply ourselves, we too can become like Afghanistan.

    Yeah. Size matters a lot, but dogs’ big advantage is the pack. Voodoo lived in a time and place where dogs had lost that advantage, and it let him be king.

    masimatutu, (edited ) to fediverse en-gb

    Default instance blocks should largely replace defederation

    Since what content users might want to see is quite unlikely to match which servers the admins tolerate, choosing instance on the Fediverse can be quite complicated, which is inconvenient and off-putting for new users.

    For this reason, and simply that the Fediverse is stronger united, I believe defederation should ideally be reserved for illegal content and extreme cases. If Fediverse platforms would allow instances to simply block the rest for users by default, the user experience would be the same, unless they decide otherwise.

    There are a lot of ways it could go wrong, for sure. IANAL, but lots of small and large companies have and do navigate these issues. But I wasn’t talking about legally contentious content; this would be a work-aruund for stuff that’s expensive to cache, or stuff you just don’t agree with and so don’t want to absorb the cost out of the goodness of yous heart. Just continue to defederate if you have any doubt.

    Anyway, it was just a potential work-around to address OP’s issue. I’m not a Lemmy dev and won’t be implementing it.

    Japan is not in “the West.” It also has a relatively small population; it’s only a third of the size of tye US, and less than a tenth of either China or India. Germany’s population is flat, but it’s even smaller than Japan. France’s population is growing. Spain’s is declining slightly, but its even smaller than Germany - half the population size! Overall, the total rate of population change in the combined EU is a fraction of the number of new people the US added, and a drop in the bucket compared to the total growth of the overall World population.

    Were you suggesting that anti-aging technology should only be available to people in the wealthier countries? Because those are almost the only ones with flat or negative growth. If everyone has access equally, then there will be a population explosion and crisis, because the countries adding the most people to the world right now are also the largest - by orders of magnitude.

    sxan,
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

    Developed countries often have flat or negative population growth. Even so[ the population of the US is still growing; we gained 1.2 million people between 2020-2021. However, it doesn’t matter, because most of the peopl in the world don’t live in “the West”. There are 300M people in the US; India, alone, has a population of 1.4 billion. India’s population grew by 11.2 million in 2020-2021.

    The total world population grew by 68 million in 2020. Where in the world did you hear that we’re having an underpopulation crisis in the West?

    Yes, we have Trump. But someday, we won’t. We won’t have Putin, or Kim Jong Un. Old age, and death by it, doesn’t guarantee that a country’s leadership will get better, but for some populations it’s their only chance.

    They’re myths, right? They can be entertaining, and they once served a function. They can even serve a function today; most of the evils perpetrated by religion were attributable to organized religion.

    We no longer depend on meat, hunting, gathering, or religion, for our society. They’re vestiges. I think “bullshit” is a bit excessive.

    100% of the dozens of DVDs in this household were purchased. You have a few in your house that were shoplifted as a counter data point, maybe?

    sxan,
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

    Rules change. This is no longer legal in any circumstance, at least for alcohol and tobacco. It appears they’ve loosened purchases in general (since the last time I looked, ca 2002) and tightened alcohol and tobacco - probably because the Cuban government profits off the sale of rum and cigars, and the current rules are designed to deny the Cuban government any benefit from US dollars without hurting the common folk too much. At least, that’s how the FAQ reads.

    What you’re describing is a public ledger, and specifically how Bitcoin and Bitcoin-like, works; you aren’t describing limitations of blockchain. Check out AWS’s qldb for a non-cryptocoin blockchain db. Now, describe an implementation (in non-technical terms, if desired) that provides the features but that isn’t a blockchain.
