Strange New Worlds is “filling in a timeline” that we absolutely know how it works out - even the characters do! It’s part of the plotline - but it’s a decent show. Sure, I have plenty of objections to the episode authors and character details, but after Abrams it’s almost refreshing. I don’t think knowing the future renders making an enjoyable series impossible, do you?

😂 Elon Musk just crawled from under a rock and discovered something that has been bothering people for years. It is just too funny not to share this one.

I can’t decide if I’m more shocked that this implies he isn’t upgrading his PC every year, or that he’s setting them up himself.

@brandonleedy@mastodon.social avatar

Okay hear me out. What if we all chipped in 5 bucks to @firefox? How many people would it take to fund it well enough so they don’t have to do layoffs? I get it, the FOSS community wants the “F” part but we all should contribute some for good infrastructure. And the idea that search engine payments from Google is what keeps Firefox afloat should worry us all. We need browser engine diversity if the web is going to stay open and not littered with walled gardens any more than it already is.

The “focusing on AI and Pocket” part provided proof that the current crisis is due to poor management. The poor management could even have come from tech leadership; I’ve met plenty of chief architects who were just as prone to bandwagon-jumping as anyone else.

It’s always poor leadership, but people on the lines never write the press releases.

Although, Reagan was, ultimately, a tool of Capitalism, so it still works.

Err so. While I've been meaning to give money to for years of use, I very much dislike being forced into a subscription. Just a reminder that it is not Libre Software, and that it's not under my control and can be taken from me on someone else's whim. Particularly for something as important as my main input method.

I'll give a go to the Pro app, and see what the subscription looks like, but it feels like it's time to reevaluate @thumbkey , I guess.

I miss being able to customise the keyboards with whatever symbols I wanted to add.

Yeah, that’s my main gripe; my ticket request to add interrobang to one of the several open swipe spots was rejected, as was someone else’s request for customizable slots. Negative interest by the dev in even accepting a PR. The proposed solution, adding yet another layout simply to add a wingle symble, baffles me. Is noone else overwhelmed by the profusion of layouts? Or the frustration of wanting one small thing from one layout, and another small thing from another, and having to choose or constantly switch between them? Such a bizzare stance.

However, despite this, ThumbKey is actively developed, and probably still tye best OSS keyboard available. And it’s free, so I try to not grumble too much. Decisions like the ones above do have an impact on my willingness to financially support the project, though.

Hardware security key options?

I've been thinking about getting a hardware security key and have heard of yubikey before; but I want to see what my options are and if they are worth it in your opinion.
My current setup is a local KeePassXC database (that I sync between my PC and phone and also acts as TOTP authenticator app), I know that KeePass supports hardware keys for unlocking the database.

I am personally still of the belief that passwords are the safest when done right; but 2FA/MFA can greatly increase security on top of that (again, if done right).
The key work work together with already existing passwords, not replace them.

As I use linux as my primary OS I do expect it to support it and anything that doesn't I will have to pass on.

PS: what are the things I need to know about these hardware keys that's not being talked about too much, I am very much delving into new territory and want to make sure I'm properly educated before I delve in.

As to why thisisawayoflife recommends these products (over OP’s consideration of Yubico), probably because Solo and Nitro keys are open source hardware and firmware.

Nitro is a German company. Yubico is a Swedish company. I can’t find where SoloKeys is located. However, the OS nature of Solo and Nitro should make that a little less important.

    So much better, and it regularly gets little QOL updates, too. It’s fast approaching Play Store (ca 2000, before they added all the steps to get past the shopping spam) convenience.

    masimatutu, (edited ) to fediverse en-gb

    Default instance blocks should largely replace defederation

    Since what content users might want to see is quite unlikely to match which servers the admins tolerate, choosing instance on the Fediverse can be quite complicated, which is inconvenient and off-putting for new users.

    For this reason, and simply that the Fediverse is stronger united, I believe defederation should ideally be reserved for illegal content and extreme cases. If Fediverse platforms would allow instances to simply block the rest for users by default, the user experience would be the same, unless they decide otherwise.

    @fediverse

    sxan,
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

    What op said still stands: if only one of your users follow a high-traffic, heavy-content /c/, then the server is caching all of that content for one person.

    E.g., there’s this great bot on Mastodon that posts random fractals, and the highest-voted ones “breed” to create a new generation of child fractals. The bot posts a static image and an animated movie of each new child every 4 hours. The images are ca 5mb each; the movies are between 20 & 40mb ea. That is, on average, 210mb/d, or 1.4gb per week. That’s a lot of data. You might, as an admin offering a free service, not want to have to pay for that much storage just because one or two users are suscribed to /c/flamereactor (“FlameReactor” is the name, so you can find this mind-blowingly awesome bot). There’s also bandwidth considerations, both on the pull and when users request the content.

    I like the idea, though, and will suggest a tweak, tried and true from Usenet days: provide the ability to unblock to only paying users. It’d give admins control, plus money to offset storage costs. Maybe provide three options to admins: full defederation; auto-block with any user able to unblock, for odeous but low impact sices; and auto-block with unblock for only users in some group - close friends, paying users, whatever.

    Lemmy could also transcribe content into links back to the source, but that’s just punting the bandwidth costs onto someone else, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is frowned upon within The Federation (although it’s common practice with Reddit and X(twitter) content).

    sxan,
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

    There are a lot of ways it could go wrong, for sure. IANAL, but lots of small and large companies have and do navigate these issues. But I wasn’t talking about legally contentious content; this would be a work-aruund for stuff that’s expensive to cache, or stuff you just don’t agree with and so don’t want to absorb the cost out of the goodness of yous heart. Just continue to defederate if you have any doubt.

    Anyway, it was just a potential work-around to address OP’s issue. I’m not a Lemmy dev and won’t be implementing it.

    can we talk about kde and tiling? i love it...

    #rambox #spotify #kde #tiling #plasma #linux @unixporn

    sxan,
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

    Because, why not?

    A good argument for tiling window managers is the fact that many people who don’t use a tooling window manager still use their WM as if it were. My wife, for instance, uses Windows for work. Every program is always maximized - in Office, even the dialog windows like the file chooser are, because they all just use the main window.

    I would say that, if you’re going to work this way anyway, use a WM that’s designed for it, not a floating WM where you’ve hacked tiling onto it. Back to the example of Windows, it is a PITA to find the right window; the way Windows presents multiple windows of the same program is hideous. It’s painful watching my wife hunting to find the right Excel spreadsheet, or PPT. Desktops (or tags) are far superior, and if you have a lot of things open, tabs.

    The exception is graphical work. Applications like Gimp, which have a lot of toolbars and frequently changing windows, are better floating (IMO).

    But, basically… use the right tool for the job, and usually a tiling WM is the right tool. Desktop widgets make for cool screen shots, but who users a computer where they ever look at the desktop?
