@mrcompletely@bourgwick 11/21 is a show I sometimes site as my all-time favorite, but also sometimes choose 11/11, 11/14, and 11/17. Just an insanely hot 2’ish week period - and even longer since Dec stays smoking
The new Summer 1973 Grateful Dead boxed set brushes up against the brief flourishing of what's come to be known as "The Phil Jazz Jam." It's probably as close as the band ever came to an organized approach to a Davis/Coltrane zone. This is my favorite version (6/24/73 Portland). #gratefuldead#jazz
@4CPcomics@mrcompletely sorry to butt in here - but I def agree that they used the solo/jam segment of a song to make up for bad vocal/lyric issues. The 12/3/79 Scarlet>Fire comes to mind - a few flubs by Jerry but he made up for it…
@mrcompletely@4CPcomics The laryngitis show might be an example - but is probably something altogether different. Jerry couldn’t sing, so he was more focused in this playing throughout the show
I link this a bit to the story Jerry told about the bday cake icing dosing he took - where he thought the entire crowd were mafia and he had to play for his life. Way oversimplifying it, but there is a sense of making up for vocal issues with playing that persisted throughout, until it didn’t. When no amount of playing could compensate and wasn’t up to par anyway..
@4CPcomics@mrcompletely@ScottM my favorite is probably from 76 too. I do like ‘83s a lot, for the exactly opposite reasons haha. Lyrically they might be a mess, but Jerry is kinda shreds and the slipknots can be pretty gnarly. Might get a Victim tease in there too (Boise and maybe a few others).
@4CPcomics@mrcompletely@ScottM yep totally agree. Loser is another early 80s example thats easily overlooked and admittedly not at the same level of fire as Slip or Scarlet>Fire.
But there is a certain potential energy that’s often just on the verge of being released on late 70s versions (which I love) that turns kinetic and pretty fierce in 82/83
@mrcompletely@ScottM@4CPcomics oh yeah, great call all around. Roses is another example I think, mainly because older Jerry sounds more sad - his voice is prefect for the lyrics later on
@ScottM@mrcompletely@shlenny@4CPcomics agree on all these points but sometimes I’m in the mood for 76 specifically and no other year will do. Nothing rally pops like other years but there is an overall vibe that sometimes just hits. And hearing Mission is cool
On a different note John, I was chatting w/ someone on the bird app who said she’d love an all ballads show. Probably in the minority there, but I wanted to ask you if you ever considered an all ballads mix from across all eras. Could be pretty cool
@mrcompletely@4CPcomics great question and def open to interpretation. Songs like Black Peter, Wharf Rat, Stella, Comes a Time, Roses, Days Between, High Time all come to mind.
@4CPcomics@mrcompletely I had overlooked a lot of 87 until I saw you post some stuff about spring a while back, and have absolutely fallen in love with that timeframe
@4CPcomics@mrcompletely yeah 87 has a lot on common with 71 I think, another year at I love. Of course, you might get a big DS or Other One in 71 that wouldn’t happen in 87, but both years have a lot of concise, tight, energetic tunes
