I had a great conversation about Linux and how it relates to privacy on the Waychman Privacy Podcast, I tried to be as understandable as possible, but you’ll be the judge of that 😅

Adding an easy way to create a Mastodon account on mastodon.social to the official app? Yes, please.

I don’t understand the drama around this. Not like it’s removing other instances, or the ability to switch instances afterwards. It just gives an easier way in for people who don’t understand the instances concept.

It’s a good thing. Anything that helps onboarding is a good thing, and no, it doesn’t mean the developer has gone evil or wants to centralize things. 🙄🙄

@atomicpoet I don’t agree. First, the « official » app is one of many. Second, mastodon.social won’t scale to user numbers that will make it a « monopoly » on instances. This is temporary to get people to start using Mastodon without a big roadblock that a lot of people seem to have a problem with.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Geniusak @iwastux They will. I see a lot of posts from people who switched instances and write a new introduction post. There is no barrier, especially for someone who used Mastodon for a month or 2 and doesn’t have tons of posts they’d like to keep.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@tau I don’t think it does.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@patrick_h_lauke Couldn’t agree more.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet @davidbures you’re mixing the platform with its utility. The fact that there would be one giant instance and plenty of micro instances would be to the detriment of the platform. It wouldn’t prevent you from using the device and keep its utility.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet Twitter isn’t open source, was never decentralized at all. This is not the same situation at all.

And there is a button to pick another server right under the one for mastodon.social. Seriously. Mountain out of a mole hill.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet @Natasha_Jay @Razemix Still doesn’t prevent you from moving. If you prize your posts above your freedom to change instances, it still doesn’t invalidate the fact that the network still allows you to move. It’s not perfect but it’s not a roadblock if you value the ability to change instances.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@islamicaudiobooks That’s what they did though? There’s a button to pick another server as well?

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@deurman @Geniusak @iwastux It might be, but it still means people can, and will switch.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Natasha_Jay @atomicpoet @Razemix Oh I would also prefer it. It would be nice to be able to migrate everything. I just don’t think it’s such a big roadblock. If you have a reason to move, I don’t think it matters that much.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@deurman @Cosipa @LivingCooki I think that’s precisely what confuses people. If people couldn’t figure out how to pick a server on the website, which offered this choice, or even why they had to pick one, I don’t think it will be clearer on the mobile app.

I think having a default signup is good, and there’s a button to pick another server right underneath it, if I’m not mistaken. Now sure, rotating the instance that’s pre selected could also be better.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@islamicaudiobooks Yes, that would definitely be better! I personally don’t see this as a roadblock, as I don’t care about my old posts, but a lot of people seem to, so it would be nice to have that as well.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet Again, it wasn’t open source. Couldn’t be forked, couldn’t be modified. So of course they had full control. That’s not the case with Mastodon ;)

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@d4r1us_drk @ged @curiousmind That’s not my experience. Sure, Gmail is popular, but I know a lot of people who have email accounts and don’t use Gmail.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@gregoryopera Bo, you can follow people from other instances all with the same account :) Your instance basically changes nothing, unless it’s defederated (in which case you can’t interact with other instances part of the network), and apart from the message length and moderation rules

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Homebrewandhacking Yes, absolutely. The instance shouldn’t take on more than it can chew. As of now, I have encountered 0 posts that I would have expected to be moderated, so I’d say they’re doing a decent job, but it’s important to check on that regularly

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@lelehier @vintprox That’s not a dark pattern at all. That’s basic UX: you put the more prominent choice front and center, and other options smaller. It would be a dark pattern if there was a nefarious purpose, which I’d argue isn’t the case here.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@kaspian In that case, no change was necessary and that would be assuming the account creation flow is good enough today, which it clearly isn’t.

The issue to solve is to get people to sign up and use a better social network than closed ones. People don’t understand the server choice. They’re not used to it, they don’t get it. If you tell them to pick a server, they’re just as most as they were before.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Lazarou Insanity!

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Homebrewandhacking I can’t say, obviously.

We’ll have to see, I guess.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@deivpaukst Except it would still be decentralized. It wouldn’t make other instances invalid. And it wouldn’t be a problem to have one instance bigger than the others, as the whole network isn’t locked down.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@pussista It does make up for it though. Because unlike Twitter, everyone can leave easily, create another instance, move to an existing one, or even fork Mastodon.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@grampajoe No, I’m assuming it’s a good thing for the world to have users educated to how the internet should work, and using open source software. And yes, this means more users are needed.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@pussista I was under the impression that multiple VC offers had already been rejected again and again. I don’t see that changing, and if it did, we would still have the reste of the network and all other instances?
