@Sh4d0w_H34rt If you read the full article, it's their own private blockchain, not "THE blockchain" like Bitcoin or Ethereum. They could've easily just used a database they only add to and never edit. Furthermore it's just email address and public key, so I'm not sure how that's breaking anonymity.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt Def agree about having a fallback, always a good idea. As for adding additional info, I'd be surprised if Proton did that. They have a very strong track record of caring about their users, IMO, but we never know what the future holds. Never hurts to have an exit strategy ready.
