theyawner,

Pick up a light dumbbell and see how long you can hold it. Take a rest and pick a heavier dumbbell and see if you can hold it for as long as you could with the lighter dumbbell.

You can also try and see how far you can walk while holding either the lighter or the heavier dumbbell.

theyawner,

Lemmy users are just showing their disapproval of the action. They have the right to do.

Would be great if they actually tried to understand the underlying issue instead of resorting to knee-jerk reactions.

theyawner,

Others have already pointed it out, but Reddit had to fight a subpoena to reveal users who discussed piracy on their site in 2011 and 2018. And just because everyone else is doing it is not a good argument to justify why this instance should expose themselves to an unnecessary risk.

theyawner,

It’s a little funny to imagine them making a scene about leaving and then you see them still active here but with an account from another instance.

theyawner, (edited )

No. It just means Reddit managed to argue for their specific case. And even then they had to spend resources that a Lemmy instance owner might not have.

theyawner,

And without. The update already provides the option to just Remove ads.

theyawner,

Christopher Nolan wants Oppenheimer to be a cautionary tale for Silicon Valley.

Techbro Sam Altman and current CEO of OpenAI:

i was hoping that the oppenheimer movie would inspire a generation of kids to be physicists but it really missed the mark on that.

let’s get that movie made!

(i think the social network managed to do this for startup founders.)

theyawner,

I rarely see movies nowadays but judging from the impressions, the movie has far more to give that outweighs whatever perceived shortcomings over some silly drawn lines.

Open the Chrome menu, go to Settings > Site Settings > All Sites. Check if you have Tiktok in there, click the site and you’ll see a Clear & reset button. Clicking the button should remove any notifications from the site coming from Chrome.

Android Community Closure Update

We have received numerous reports from users about the closure of the c/android community. While we fully support the original community owners’ decision to move to another instance, it will eventually be necessary to open up the community on Lemmy.world. The beauty of the fediverse is that multiple communities on the same...

theyawner,

I don’t see a problem with the example you presented. The three gaming-oriented communities you listed all have their own cultures that have essentially become tied with their branding, each with their own appeal. It would be more confusing to have three gaming communities all using the same name but with different approaches on how they manage their communities. At that point, you’ll have to create a guide on which instances would have the type of community that aligns more with your preferences.

theyawner,

There’s also memes. Memes are arguably more likely to trivialize issues even if it was not the intent. I was surprised to learn when a friend talked about a stuff toy their kid wanted. They were not familiar with the character/s until I gathered from their description that the kid wanted countryballs merch.

But what’s alarming is that the kid seemed like they enjoyed memes around Nazi Germany and Russia as if they’re Saturday morning cartoon anti-heroes.

theyawner,

It looks like a caricature. Kinda like Into the Spider-Verse’s version of Kingpin in vehicle form.

theyawner,

TL;DR:

Teddit is an open source software intended as an alternative front-end to reddit. It doesn’t use an API (hence why you can only view it), but it still connects to reddit in order to present content. That means reddit can still implement restrictions to the servers hosting teddit.

theyawner,

Lay-by areas are exceedingly rare in EDSA. Kapag nasiraan ka, usually talaga sa nearest gas station ang option mo.

Honestly, part of the problem is that riders tend to follow herd mentality. Yung tipong they feel emboldened kapag nakita nilang ginagawa na rin naman ng iba kahit alam naman nilang mali (i.e. counterflow, using the bus lane as a speed lane).

In this particular case, they often take shelter under MRT stations and take up more than half of the road, creating bottle necks.

theyawner,

Meron ka na starting part to build your own submersible.

theyawner,

They seem to really want to double down on AI. They apparently even thought that they should be allowed to scan filming extras and use their likeness for current and future projects, all for one day’s pay.

theyawner,

And for the right reasons. The only ones that could be negatively affected are the other support jobs related to Hollywood productions.

theyawner,

I’ve been using Globe@Home fixed wireless for my home internet since the height of the pandemic. It was serviceable, with bandwidth ranging from 5Mbps to 10Mbps. Enough for browsing, Youtube/Netflix, remote work, and the occasional large downloads.

But last night I got to test a 5G router with a DITO SIM and I was getting up to 600Mbps download in my area. I also tried my own Globe@Home SIM with the 5G router and surprisingly got a 5G signal as well, albeit at 40Mbps download.

Now I’m mulling if I should ditch the Globe account over a DITO account (with a plan that offers the same 5G router I tested) or if I should just go with my original plan to buy an open-line 5G router. I’m still leaning towards the latter, but there’s not a lot of choices for a good 5G router and they’re hella expensive.

theyawner,

Main argument nung sa writer’s strike is that writers are not getting their rightful share of the profit. Moreso with the widespread plan to adopt AI to further reduce the perceived costs on hiring actual writers. Writers want AI out of the production. It’s affecting you now, but it’s going to make everything shitty in the next coming years if it’s not opposed. That includes the need to hire ghost writers.

theyawner,

You’re going to need to sign up to another instance that’s still federated with my instance.

theyawner,

Enjoying video calls? A Filipino made it possible

Medyo overblown yung title. The patent is basically utilizing two existing technologies (TV and telephone). The novel part may be the method to combine the TV and telephone signals, transmit the combined signals to a data line, and separate the signals to feed them to the other party’s TV/telephone. It’s also misleading how the article implied that AT&T followed suit after Zara made the patent; as if AT&T didn’t have their own development team.

Lastly, a quick look at Wikipedia gave me a lead on how the 1930’s Germany post office had a working video-telephone system. But it’s basically a CCTV and a telephone placed on the same room. If I’m understanding it right, the former uses a dedicated coax cable that can only be run between the two remote locations, while the telephone system is basically what’s available at the time.

It’s unfortunate that lemmy.world continues to experience various issues in the past week. But the up side of it is that all the other instances could benefit from the fixes.

On a related note, I’ve been using Sync and old.reddit for so long now that I didn’t realize how different new.reddit is from before they started implementing the new UI. It’s using the same topics paradigm (ala hashtags) that makes the official app a mess to use. I’ve only used it for some mod actions that were not available at old.reddit.

theyawner,

Nearly a month ago I requested for my reddit data and I just got the file today. A few notes:

  • It has all my comments since 2011. But a large part of it is unavailable on the actual site if I take a look at my profile.
  • Most of the data is comprised of my comments (around 15000+), posts (almost 200), upvoted/downvoted comments, upvoted/downvoted posts, etc.
  • IPs used to access the site are logged for about the last 3 months or so.
