OrangeXarot,

where the fuck is infinity for lemmy

punseye,

if i am not wrong, it is google ads that does all the tracking, so once you get the adfree version, tracking doesn’t happen

Sir_Simon_Spamalot,

Imma stick with Jerboa. Their gradual improvement is amazing!

ben_dover,

you know, you can block ads on Android. add as many trackers as you want, NextDNS will just sinkhole them 🤷‍♂️ it works just like PiHole. Adguard is good too. no need for any subscription.

bitwolf,

Can you remove the nav drawer on Infinity? My fav part about sync is how reachable it’s UI is with the bottom-centric nav menus.

kratoz29,

I am using both, Sync feels more polished for now.

negativeyoda,

Yeah, this shit is getting old really quickly.

What client I use doesn’t affect your experience. I and lots of others are reddit refugees and I used sync for years. I’m ecstatic to have the interface back.

Bullshit gatekeeping and bickering over ideological purity doesn’t help anyone. At the end of the day, lemmy is confusing for someone accustomed to reddit. There is a learning curve. Most of us just want to exchange info and converse. I don’t give a fuck to learn about FOSS and all that other bullshit any more than any of you want to learn the specialized minutiae I have to sift through at my day job.

Shut the fuck up already. This sort of discourse lands like a bunch of shitty kids meeting at a half empty bar all criticizing how one another got there

anguo,

Infinity was a reddit app first, too.

acutfjg,

Agreed. Nobody gave a fuck the app used on Reddit, and there’s no reason to care now. You do you

Tbird83ii,

Except for Reddit themselves… They certainly seemed to care…

acutfjg,

🤣🤣🤣 damn true

negativeyoda,

Hahaha, thanks for all bringing it back and reminding us why we’re all here

sturmblast,

nailed it

TopRamenBinLaden,

You are commenting on a meme that says the same thing you just did in a slightly different and more concise way, though. All I see in the comments is people saying why they prefer one app over another. I don’t really see anybody bashing people for picking a a specific app.

I think you are overreacting a bit.

If you do see people being bullied for picking one app over another, then I apologize. I just mostly see people criticizing Sync for not being FOSS, or see people criticizing the FOSS stuff for not being user friendly. I don’t really see a problem with people criticizing software, as long as it isn’t an attack on the users of said software.

I do agree that there are too many damn posts about this, but I don’t really care about it that much. Maybe others do.

squaresinger,

I do see a lot of people caring a lot about whether you are using sync or not.

negativeyoda,

I mean. If we’re going to ride that analogy it sounds like sync is an automatic transmission while FOSS is manual.

I just want to get where I want to go. Who cares how it happens? It’s not like sync is imessage and fucks things up for other users

My past was a reaction to a LOT of vitriolic anti-sync posts and comments. They’re all over and they’re baffling

TopRamenBinLaden,

It’s just a FOSS argument vs a closed source argument. It happens with everything. Look at Linux and Windows. Android and Apple. I agree that it can be annoying, and I don’t partake myself, but it’s not really that big of a deal as long as nobody is being personally attacked. This kind of discussion won’t really be detrimental to this platform.

Manual versus automatic is a pretty good way to put it. I like your analogy. It’s just a dumb argument for about how people want their personal things to work.

I can completely understand the annoyance with how many posts have been made about it. I am a developer who has contributed to FOSS projects, so I hear arguments like this all of the time amongst peers. I could personally care less just like you. I use little bits of both depending on my use case.

I’m using Connect, Sync and Infinity. Sync is the most polished but Connect is very close. Connect let’s you post as well as reply whereas Sync and Infinity only let you reply.

kratoz29,

Connect is very good, the only thing I don’t like is how to handle the hiding read posts, I like more how Voyager, Summit and Sync do it.

0ops,

I’m too lazy to check, but I swear I turned on the setting for that in connect. Doesn’t seem to work though so moot point I guess

Mindlight,

I’ve been jumping around trying 4-5 clients since the Reddit Exodus and all of them had some really anything bug. Voyager is the one that in my opinion is the best one feature and stability wise. However, voyager if giving me one big headache in the form of going totally black if I swap over to fx read an email. I don’t care if you’re my Firefox needing things up. I’m not going to opt in even more in Google Surveillance just because Voyager is open source.

Sync for Reddit was my whole Reddit experience for the last 7-8 years. I think I tried a majority of the clients and Sync totally wiped the floor with the other clients in my opinion. Both in new features and stability.

I use Windows and several dists on a daily basis. I have an Android phone and I truly like the philosophy behind open source… With that said… Competition is great. We’ll see what Sync for Lemmy can bring to the table. If it is as good as sync for Reddit was the other clients have to shape up and it’s us, the users, that will benefit.

This message was created with Sync for Lemmy.

adolf_hitler,

I’m pretty happy with Jerboa but I’m waiting for RedReader to add Lemmy support.

recluse,

Why can’t I just use the service that has a design I like?

I wouldn’t have used reddit if it wasn’t for sync and that same logic applies to lemmy. Adoption is critical for lemmy to succeed so please tone it down a bit, unless having the same 2 dozen people in your community was your personal appealing feature of lemmy.

madeinthebackseat,

Yep. Incentives align differently for different people, which is what makes a healthy market work.

jonesy,

You can

Don’t worry, this type of “drama” is only serving to make the community larger in the long run.

isVeryLoud,

Y’all gotta stop shitting on non-FOSS Lemmy apps.

Lemmy is Lemmy, let people access the platform how they want to. It doesn’t affect you. Don’t use Sync if you don’t want to.

Blurghglurgh,
@Blurghglurgh@lemmy.world avatar

Speak for yourself, but Infinity really isn’t as well made as Sync. I’d rather pay one time for a quality experience and support the developer. Also, no ads in the paid version.

Skkorm, (edited )

I bought Sync Pro for Reddit, and I’ll do the same for Lemmy. Open-source can suck a butt, I’m willing to pay for a well made app

Edit: lmao the replies! To be clear, I am not talking shit on open source software, the “open source can go suck a butt” comment was in reference to taking the time to get used to a new app when I don’t have to 😝 Go touch grass. Sync treated me well, I’m willing to pay the creator to have that same experience on Lemmy. That’s it. Stop being defensive, go for a walk.

iso,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Why people insulting them just for this comment? Open-source fanatics are real.

Zeeroover,

Because there wouldn’t be a Sync if it wasn’t for opensource. Sync is piggybacking off of opensource.

Mindlight,

Care to elaborate on how Sync is piggybacking off on open source?

gkd,
@gkd@lemmy.ml avatar

I think they are saying that without the core Lemmy team, there wouldn’t be a platform for Sync to build off of (or Kbin, but same thing applies). There’s obvious truth in that statement, but I don’t think it’s a reason to belittle people for being willing to pay for an app. However in OP’s case here, (at least without the edit) it does kind of come across as a “fuck you” to the actual platform that Sync is using. Probably not his intention, but perception is reality.

If anything though, we should be reminding people of this and asking them to consider also donating to the continued development of Lemmy or to the running of the instance they use. Not sure why there’s this huge circlejerk about people paying for Sync. Let people do what they want…

APassenger,

It’s good to see this point being made.

There’s a lesson here: people are willing to pay good money to participate on lemmy. What applies to the app may (I’d hope) apply to servers and development.

Sync user and server supporter, here. Hope we only grow in number.

samus12345,
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

Probably because of

Open-source can suck a butt

They then edited and said they’re not taking a shit on open source software, in direct contradiction to what they said before. It shouldn’t be a surprise that people didn’t like it. Also, “touch grass” is a really stupid phrase since most people browse the internet on their phones and can just as easily be outside sitting in grass as anywhere else.

kevinbacon,
@kevinbacon@lemmy.world avatar

All your closed source software runs on open source libraries dipshit.

RaoulDook,

People that diss open source are dumbass dipshits. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Open source software runs most of the Internet and this social media platform. It has provide more value to every one of us than any closed source retail software ever could.

MarcRnt,

I’m sorry to say, but you seem to be clueless in the world of software engineering. Open vs closed source does not make any software better or worse. This solely depends on the talent and will of the developers to create a good app for you. That can happen in both worlds, but just because an app is not open source doesn’t make it better in any ways. Rethink it. Sync might be a nice client, but you’re dependent on this one dev to always deliver a good experience and keep updating, whereas if it was open source, you could be sure someone would continue the work and help fix some issues if anything was to happen. Open source has a lot of potential. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking it’s worse in any way. It’s not.

cyberpunk007,

Theres often times I come across an open source product that beats the shit out of the closed source alternatives too

YellowmanfromMoon,

Infinty supports Lemmy now?

VioletteRei,

Yes, it’s a different app but it work as well

YellowmanfromMoon,

nice definitely gonna try that out.

ijeff,
@ijeff@lemdro.id avatar

It’s a fork !infinityforlemmy.

waffle,
Perkele,
pandora,

I’ll wait on sync until infinity for lemmy becomes usable, but yeah, infinity better

Leviathan,

I haven’t had a problem using it yet.

cyberpunk007,

How? I’ve been using sync for Reddit for so long I never tried some of the other ones like body or infinity. I actually had no idea it was open source either

JackBruh,

It works good enough tho
