Geeks, any thoughts on home mesh kit?

  • I don't want anything that has a SAAS component/subscription to it
  • I've a 3 bed semi - does not need to smash through lots of walls
  • Ideally the mesh points would hve USb so I can power other things off them and reduce my plug us.

What's all this 4/5/6/7 stuff about?

Follow up - is this article https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-mesh-router,review-5191.html full of shit of should I just buy their best value recommendation the TP-Link Deco XE75?

@coldclimate @RonJeffries I run Devolo Magic2. So wifi mesh and powerline connectivity. Seems to work pretty well.

How many more times? Your key players have options. They provide huge value. If you force them back to old ways of working you will lose them to anyone who needs their skills and is prepared to accommodate their preferences. And many will take you to court first for unfair dismissal before leaving.

Remote working works. But adapting to it is entirely optional. Much like survival 🤷‍♂️🦕☄️💥

I’ll add something else here. As an employee it will be unlikely that you can take on a large corporate employer with a well funded legal team.

So JOIN A UNION.

They will have clued up legal folks on standby who can advise and act as appropriate on your behalf.

Your employer doesn’t need to officially recognise a union to join one. Nor can they penalise you for joining a union either. (Disclaimer: UK law)

Just do it. YKIMS!

Just had to enter the hellhole that is Xwitter for something. OMG, it’s now totally unuseable. Junk everywhere, UI designed so it’s difficult to get a curated stream of decent info.

Someone put the company out of our misery for goodness sake!

So, it seems, I had my little rockstar moment after my DDDEU talk. Heuh ⁉️ 😳

Well, it's flattering to hear people are surprised others know me personally. But also a bit embarrassing.

It is not because I public speak and apparently give a confident impression (although, the experience in my head is quite the opposite) that I am not approachable.

I know I can look a bit angry when alone. But that is just me worried when in big crowds or dreaming 🤷

💯 this. It’s very easy to be productive if you don’t care if the output is correct. You can generate tons of junk very quickly if you don’t care that it’s junk.

TFW you're testing a website, and know there's an ID in the html that you need to proceed but it's obfuscated somehow. That.

(Why make your website so hard to test, dear Web Site Designer? WHY???)

Anyone here on SpiderOak One? Is yours still down? (Mine isn't backing up)
They seem to be having trouble with the migration to their new datacentre.

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

On a related subject…what alternatives are out there? I'm on a lifetime unlimited data deal right now for $150 pa which until the recent flakiness has served me well.

So as a Plan B, what are people using that won't break the bank for 5TB-ish secure off-site cloud backup storage?
[Edit: preferably with an app that quietly runs in the background backing up selected data/directories]

On related news, if you know of a place in London for my partner, motorbike and myself in London (from the 30th of June till the 7th of July) I’d highly appreciate it! 🙏🏼

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@ecomba Depends what you mean by “in London”. Central is eyewateringly expensive. But head out to the suburbs (a tube ride away from central) you should find things get cheaper. Although admittedly I haven’t needed an extended stay in London since pre-Covid and pre-Truss economic crash.

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@ecomba Also, I did see you placed your partner before your motorcycle there. Well done, I hope it was noted! 😁

EqualExperts are probably the first big consultancy to declare SAFe "unsafe at any speed"
https://www.equalexperts.com/blog/our-thinking/problems-with-safe-framework/

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@sleepyfox Good. Hopefully the start of common sense taking over. I have felt like a voice in the wilderness over SAFe and all I got was grief, and management quietly admitting to me “yes, we know it's insane, but we paid a lot of money on other consultants before you arrived so we cannot change it”

Sunk-cost-fallacy-tastic 🙄

All panelists at report that a big challenge in converting Java to Kotlin is use of nulls in Java. I’m amazed teams allow use of null in Java code. We didn’t run into this problem because we never allowed Java code to return null or pass null in parameters. I would strongly recommend this for any Java project, whether you intend to convert it to Kotlin or not.

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@natpryce I always try to push that approach, but the majority of Java developers I’ve worked with are simply woefully unprepared for this idea - IME it’s often a conceptual step too far. Unfortunately an awful lot seem to have fallen into the “expert beginner” trap.
