While #DuckDuckGo is down, I tried out a few other search engines. I did a search I made yesterday in each. #Bing gave me an interesting looking blog first, then some less-related info from high-trust sources, then an interesting paper, then a bunch of garbage. #Mojeek gave me nothing that looked interesting, just pages that used some of the words from my search. #Kagi gave me the less-related high-trust sources first, then the entire rest of the first page looked interesting.
I don't know why the state of #Utah is bound and determined to build a port on toxic, sensitive wetlands when there's plenty of toxic, hyper-low-density industrial land around Magna. Heck, the Church has an enormous empty plot right next to the UP Intermodal. Let that be your port.
Yeah. Certainly is easier to describe myself as White Midwestern North American, raised Catholic than any of the near dozen backgrounds my family comes from.
One of my coworkers has never seen remote desktops before and I think it must be breaking their fundamental understanding of what computers are because it's a struggle teaching them to use it. #watercooler
The Northern Corridor in St. George is estimated to cost about $125 million. That should be enough to run 15 minute bus service between Ivins and Washington for 30 years. Highways are not responsible uses of money.
Yesterday's xkcd shows the kind of wreck I was in that made me decide to give up driving. The only one who's coming out of it happy is the assassin. https://xkcd.com/2932/
I can't help but compare the beaches where I last lived and where I live now. The only sound at my old beach was the roar of tires on the 4-lane highway that ran parallel to it. Now when I go to the beach the loudest sounds are honks from ducks, clicks from coots, and screeches of blackbirds.
If you have eclipse glasses, you can look at the sun today and see that massive sunspot cluster that's causing all these geomagnetic disruptions. It's neat.
I've seen it on social media a few times this week, and it tickles me that the equivalent idiom to "it's all Greek to me" in German directly translates to "I only understand train station"
Normally I'm only searching online for technical information, and, yeah, there's a ton of spam, but the top results don't seem noticeably written by AI. Last night I was doing research for shopping, and holy shit basically every other page I clicked on was clearly written by AI. Loads of self-contradictions, that weird tone that they have, and taking forever to make a point (at least longer than it took to set off my BS-detectors).
It's been a while since I was in school, so it only just dawned on me that these campus protests are happening at the last minute possible. At my local university, classes ended more than a week ago. Hardly any students will be on campus after finals ended yesterday.
We should think about requiring operators of trucks containing flammable materials to carry ruinously expensive insurance. They've been destroying so many bridges recently it feels like a conspiracy.
With the buzz that the government might relocate Abravanel Hall so there can be more stadium-oriented businesses on that block, I was curious who owned the massive parking lot next to Courthouse station. I'm surprised but not surprised.
(for those who don't know City Creek Reserve, Inc. is a for-profit arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). #SaltLakeCity
