If you have eclipse glasses, you can look at the sun today and see that massive sunspot cluster that's causing all these geomagnetic disruptions. It's neat.

I've been near Manchester for a few days, so I thought I'd pop in for a bit of sightseeing yesterday.

Let's be real though, this was just an excuse to ride the Metrolink

timesandseasons,
@timesandseasons@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@portlygent In Manchester Metrolink has to share ridership with a competent mainline rail network. The Calgary trams just have to share with buses. When I went to Manchester the mainline trains were clearly the best way to get around for many trips.

I've seen it on social media a few times this week, and it tickles me that the equivalent idiom to "it's all Greek to me" in German directly translates to "I only understand train station"

Normally I'm only searching online for technical information, and, yeah, there's a ton of spam, but the top results don't seem noticeably written by AI. Last night I was doing research for shopping, and holy shit basically every other page I clicked on was clearly written by AI. Loads of self-contradictions, that weird tone that they have, and taking forever to make a point (at least longer than it took to set off my BS-detectors).

It's been a while since I was in school, so it only just dawned on me that these campus protests are happening at the last minute possible. At my local university, classes ended more than a week ago. Hardly any students will be on campus after finals ended yesterday.

We should think about requiring operators of trucks containing flammable materials to carry ruinously expensive insurance. They've been destroying so many bridges recently it feels like a conspiracy.

With the buzz that the government might relocate Abravanel Hall so there can be more stadium-oriented businesses on that block, I was curious who owned the massive parking lot next to Courthouse station. I'm surprised but not surprised.

(for those who don't know City Creek Reserve, Inc. is a for-profit arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

@Slyence Eh, maybe easterners are sleeping on it, but nobody in the west is. The situation is being actively negotiated, but no resolution is in sight and there are more interested parties than ever (now that we actually care what Mexico and the native tribes think).

The Republican Party has never forgiven Spencer Cox for shedding a tear after the Pulse massacre. That man has signed whatever anti-trans, anti-child hateful bills crossed his desk, but the Party nominated a criminal over him because of that long ago moment of empathy.

A historic (old) apartment thing I’ve seen is bedrooms with a sink but no bathroom. What’s up with that? Indoor plumbing was clearly not a hurdle — hence the sink — so why not a bathroom?

timesandseasons,
@timesandseasons@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@petes_bread_eqn_xls It was a cultural thing to have wash basins in bedrooms back then. Plus toilets were and are expensive and take up more space than just a sink (especially since you'd want a separate room for the toilet).

The local (national chain) coffee shop got a beer and wine license this month, and I'm interested to see what they do with it. I'd totally go over there for an evening beer if the prices are reasonable. One of my favorite coffee shops (sadly lost during 2020) did cocktails and live music in the evenings that was a lot of fun.

I'm still pissy that UTA was one of the first transit agencies to have open-loop contactless payments and they killed it right when contactless cards were getting popular. At least they're bringing it back now, but that will take a while.

Less than half [of Americans] think electric cars are better for the climate. Pretty damning, considering there is strong consensus that EVs have a lower carbon footprint (even when the electricity mix is pretty heavy in coal).3 Electric cars are certainly better for the climate in the United States.

Source

This is bad. Let your friends and family know that EVs are good, actually

timesandseasons,
@timesandseasons@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@jenbanim "Batteries are bad actually" is one of the most insidious things the pro-warming crowd have put out recently. Like sure there are lots of environmental and social impacts of making batteries, but coal extraction involves literal mountaintop removal and other kinds of surface mining, and oil is prone to leaks that devastate entire regions for years.

The @sltrib in a story today linked to this HHS factsheet about IVF. I had no idea that in several states IVF accounts for a full 5% of births. Also the correlations with wealth and political party are interesting.

Step 1: Activist investors force Norfolk Southern to gut themselves for short term profits

Step 2: NS starts declining in profitability, eventually starts posting losses

Step 3: The other Class I railroads try buying NS. STB says no

Conclusion: Conrail 2: Electric Boogaloo

Some people oppose the Northern Corridor because of some tortoises. I oppose the Northern Corridor because putting 18 lane-miles of high-speed road through rough terrain to "relieve congestion" at one intersection is a bad use of money.

timesandseasons,
@timesandseasons@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

I put "relieve congestion" in quotes because clearly they want to induce demand but won't say that out loud because it'd bring the NIMBYs out. I say if they want more housing without the congestion, build in St. George and improve Suntran. There's plenty of vacant and underutilized lots.
