The tenth and final travel day of my winter journey starts. This train brunch will have to do for the trip to Copenhagen.

Note: No meat. I have had enough meat during this trip to cover my attempt to have meat at most once a week for months.

Taking a shiny new Trenitalia “Blues” hybrid train (electric/diesel) by Hitachi from Catania to Siracusa. The train started in Messina so it doesn’t need the diesel functionality, not sure why this model is used. Will continue to Ragusa. Maybe it is the same unit that will run there? Will see.

In , when you buy a single ticket for local transport, IIRC the rule usually says that you are allowed to change bus/tram/metro during the ticket’s validity period, except that you are not allowed to make a return trip, go back to where you started. What is the rationale for this? @jon

Arrived in Copenhagen after a completely uneventful journey from Stockholm with train 525. Exactly as scheduled. Travelled in first class, as one tends to do, and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. (The SJ lounge at Stockholm C was closed for religious reasons today and would have opened anyway only at 10:00 on Sundays.) Thank you, SJ, Trafikverket, and Banedanmark. Now I have almost two hours to spend before taking the train to Hamburg.

In Vienna, where I will take the night train to Braşov in Romania. Visited the Albertina Modern museum. Not too large, which is great. Exhibition focusing on diversity. Now having goulash and beer at Cafe Hawelka. Then possibly cake.

Do I misremember, or is Culmont-Chalindrey famous in rail fan circles for being a large and (formerly?) important junction even if in the middle of roughly nowhere? The track on the long curved viaduct was impressive. @jon @partim

Quite remarkable that this TGV power car, the one that did the 515.3 km/h speed record in 1990, has a very standard and plain hook for coupling the rest of the train at the end.

Third travel day of . If I had woken up earlier, and it had been a workday, I could maybe have done a nice round-trip from Bozen via Franzensfeste/Fortezza and Lienz in Osttirol to Villach and then through Udine or something to Milano. Now it will have to be just some back-and-forth and then a more straight route to Milano.

The winter trip continues from Hamburg to München with ICE 703, using an ICE 1 set. The train from Copenhagen last night arrived five minutes early! So much for “constant delays”. Slept over in a cheap(ish) but perfectly adequate hotel right by the station.

Lots of breakfast alternatives offered at the station.

Sadly I won’t be travelling in the orange/cream coloured beauties, but in a more modern DMU, I assume.

It’s warm and sunny here in Copenhagen! Have to roll up my semi-winter coat and put it in the Freitag bag. A bit surprisingly, it turned out to be essential during this April.

The worst thing about tinkering with hardware is the large force often required. Especially for 24-pin power connectors. Very scary to pull out a such, it can require great force. You can see the motherboard bending which surely isn't good for fragile electronics. Why hasn't the industry moved on to zero insertion (and extraction) force connectors for motherboard power connectors? (Yes, I know, historical debt...)

Or am I just holding it wrong? Is there some magical tool to use?

Walked to the station to watch trains. And I happen to see one of these fun trains that go between Nyugati and stations. Displayed and announced very normally, as if somebody actually would take this train for such a journey. I wonder how hard it would be to troll some tourist into taking this train between these two stations?

Good Morning Altona. Fairly boring view from our hotel window. Harbour themed decorations behind the beds. Cheap but reasonable quality hotel, Meininger. Good sized room, excellent water pressure in shower. Maybe 400 m from Altona station.

My first time in one of the infamous DMUs. I like their exterior design, but am disappointed that 1st class has 2+2 seating. Plus the engine noise is louder than in the much older and presumably soon to be obsolete IC3 units, wtf. Going from Fredericia to Bramming where I will change to the fourth and final train of today, to Ribe.

Oh, and the AC is broken. It is only 21 degrees outside but quite warm inside. I don’t dare imagine how it would be at 30+ degrees outside temperature.

Good morning from Žilina. It is 2 degrees and snowing. As we (sarcastically) say in Finland, May Day weather.

The hotel was very good, spacious room and bathroom. Pleasant breakfast. Close to the station.

Takin local train to Martin as a start. A Škoda EMU from 2021.

Nett hier? Offenburg, Baden-Württemberg.

Pleasant small city to overnight in when travelling from Paris towards Hamburg and the Echte Norden. Very quiet in the night, was nice to hear the birds sing when falling asleep. Relatively inexpensive Ibis Styles hotel (although I don’t see what the “styles” refers to in this case) (not in pic).
