@tml @mkivinen May I suggest the Salento? It may have decidedly fewer mountains, but the landscape is somehow still very interesting. The towns are all ridiculously pretty. And the FSE is a very enjoyable, very relaxed railway.

@partim @mkivinen Yes, following the railways along the coast of Italy, especially the southern half, is something I have wanted to do.

Got interested in Calabria when a guy whose name I don’t recall live-tweeted some year ago how far he could get by rail in 24 h from London, and he finished in a small Calabrian town, with bilingual (Italian and Greek(!)) street signage. #Interrail

If you go via Napolli—Reggio, make sure to do that bit in daylight rather than in the sleeper and choose a seat on the land side.
