    @mcc From what I've read it's basically Meta licensing their Quest OS to other hardware makers. "Open ecosystem" feels slightly misleading in that their OS is still closed source. Feels like Windows licensing to laptop makers.

    One good thing is that they're getting rid of their two-tier store system where they have their regular store (subject to more strict reviews) and a hidden away "lab" for stuff they didn't seem worthy. It's all getting rolled into the main store.

    Just got back from some business travel in Europe. Nice to see USB-C charge ports showing up in hotel rooms and airport seating.

    @dneto Similarly, the last few cars that I've rented had USB-C ports as well for Android Auto/Car Play, which is nice.

    This GDC talk about Tears of the Kingdom's physics and sound systems is delightful! If you are somewhat familiar with how these things generally work in games there's not much here that'll take you by surprise, but it's presented in a very engaging fashion by people who are obviously passionate about their work. (And I continue to be amazed that this all runs so well on the Switch's limited hardware!)

    Every month or so I poke my head into the ex-birdsite to check my DMs, because I would frequently get requests from developers looking for help with some concept in one of the APIs I've helped develop.

    Today I checked and I had one (1) legit request for help, who ended up reaching out to me a different way anyway, and numerous invites for me to get in on the ground floor of some "Web3" crypto scam.

    Guess that's a sign that I don't need to check those DMs anymore.

    @mcc @leona What does xitter use for that these days? (Or rather, what does Elon wish everyone used, because we all know people still call it tweeting.)

    Do you go to X to X your Xs to your fellow Xers? That's... that's supposed to be a joke but as I type it I'm realizing that's it isn't it? It's so dumb that it's definitely what Elon wants.

    welp, I've officially beaten Final Fantasy 7!!

    ...........one more thing off my giant list of "things that I have an irrational sense that I'm not entitled to" I guess?

    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @RavenWorks You were playing the original? Yeah, it's just straight up bizarre sometimes.

    It gives the modern remakes all the more cognitive dissonance. They really really want to lean into big drama moments (and really want to have a lot more Sephiroth) but they also don't want to piss off fans by leaving out too much of the source material, so you still end up with the weird side too, but now in glorious HD and trying very hard to fit in the more serious overall tone.

    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @RavenWorks I haven't played all the way through, I lost interest mid way. But the best way I can describe it is the difference between The Hobbit in novel form and The Hobbit in Peter Jackson Movie Trilogy form: Ostensibly the same story, but miles apart in terms of presentation.

    The original is kinda clunky but well liked for a reason (though in retrospect a healthy part of it is simple nostalgia).

    1/2

    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @RavenWorks The new one is very modern and shiny, but way too long for its own good, and split into multiple parts for no apparent reason aside from increasing sales. It drags out tiny story beats into major scenes and dwells on characters that had little presence in the original simply because they're fan favorites. And it's still clunky, just in new and sometimes frustrating ways. 2/2

    Went to Best Buy with my wife to get her a Chromebook to replace her (very) old laptop, where we met Sales Guy who:

    • Stuck around giving "advice" after we said we were fine, thanks. 🙄
    • Continued to explain Chromebooks to us after I pointed out that I work on the Chrome team. 😠
    • Pointed to my wife and asked "Does your mom want this on her account?" 🤬
    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @dneto My wife was still using a 2011 MacBook Air. MacOS had become impractical to run on it but she still liked the hardware, so I installed ChromeOS Flex on it and that gave it new life for a few more years. (It was honestly magical) Eventually the battery just gave out, though.

    Serious props to Apple for hardware that lasts that long, even if their software doesn't scale with it.

    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @dneto I feel this one pretty hard right now. My 2019 work MacBook (with the bad keyboard) does not have a hard drive large enough to contain both the current MacOS and one (1) Chrome release build.

    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @litherum @dneto Yes, but if you've upgraded the OS I believe it reserves some space for a backup in case you need to revert. Also the OS typically needs a fair amount more space during the update than during it's steady state, so the size required at install time will be a surprisingly high number.

    Looking into how to set up a bluesky server.

    Noticed this bit here, in the documentation. That's an interesting way to spell "cannot"

    My favorite part is that after all the common terms and famous people is "a couple more prominent accounts, subjectively" which contains accounts like "potus", "aoc", "gretathunberg", and... "dril".

    Published a new glMatrix v4 beta! (Only three days short of a year after the first beta...😩)

    Gonna try to pick up the pace of addressing feedback and getting it released. I've been using this branch in my personal code for the last year and it's quite a bit nicer to use IMO. Hope that you all feel the same!

    This is not good. A thing that gives me hope:

    Iran has the capability to strike Israel in under 15 minutes. Iran has anti-ship drones that are almost impossible to shoot down. Iran could have shot first and stayed silent and then claimed responsibility hours later.

    Iran chose to do a strike that provided hours of early warning. Iran used drones that are relatively easy to shoot down. Iran announced that they were retaliating before they did so.

    tojiro,
    @tojiro@mastodon.social avatar

    @mekkaokereke Yeah, there's a lot of complex issues here but this ain't one of them. I feel very comfortable with my "political stance" of being firmly against the harm/kidnapping/murder of children in any context, but especially by military personnel. And if your first question upon hearing that is "which children?" you are on the wrong side.

    Like... Elon is really out there trying to regex his way to making X happen. (And creating unlimited new scam sites in the process)
