@leona If Twitter no longer uses the word "tweet" could we just genericize the term? A tweet is a short message within a limited-space system, like a microblogging platform or a chat system
@mcc@leona my endorsement doesn't carry any legal weight, and I'm obviously biased, but as the person who coined the word "tweet", I wholeheartedly support this approach. 😁
@mcc@leona Sadly, Twitter owns a legal trademark on the term "tweet". It's not a big deal for everyday usage but other platforms won't be able to use it for themselves.
@zalasur Yeah but if they fail at enforcing third party uses, and they aren't using the term commercially themselves, don't they eventually lose the trademark? I don't understand Law
@mcc Depends. Historically, it has happened but it took a court case to invalidate the trademark, at least in Beyer's case when "aspirin" was formally challenged. It doesn't mean that circumstances will play out the same in every case in the future though. Courts are fickle and Musk has deep pockets.
I do know that you and I can use "tweet" all we want in everyday conversation. But we can't sell a product that uses the word "tweet" to post a message to the Internet.
