you can find the (unabridged) slide deck of my talk "from here to resilience" i gave at at https://speakerdeck.com/ufried/from-here-to-resilience-a-travel-guide.

it discusses what resilience actually means (as there is a lot of confusion), how a typical journey towards resilience looks like and if we always need to go the whole way.

i just released part 6 (of 7) of my blog series about software misconceptions, this time discussing what those misconceptions mean for the current "ai will replace software developers" debate (spoiler alert: it is not as easy as the advocates of that narrative try to make us believe): https://www.ufried.com/blog/software_fallacies_6/. enjoy if you like ... ;)

"Finding someone to buy a startup you’ve funded takes marketing and hype. The company doing anything useful, or anything that even works, is optional." (from https://amycastor.com/2023/09/12/pivot-to-ai-pay-no-attention-to-the-man-behind-the-curtain/).

for me that is the biggest problem of the current ai debate. it is almost impossible to tell fact from fiction because you must always ask yourself if any statement regarding ai was floated just to increase a valuation.

however, many people take all those statements at face value. does not make things easier ...

i just released the 5th part of my blog series about software misconceptions. this time i discuss the invisibility dilemma and the malleability curse which mutually affect each other (and of course also affect the misconceptions i discussed in the prior posts of this series): https://www.ufried.com/blog/software_fallacies_5/. enjoy if you like ... ;)

i just released the 3rd post of my blog series debunking widespread software misconceptions, this time discussing what the broken abstraction dilemma means for AI-based code generation (completing the 2nd post of the series) and the greenfield fallacy, i.e., ignoring that we usually work in the brownfield in software development and need to integrate new requirements into an existing solution (with all its consequences): https://www.ufried.com/blog/software_fallacies_3/. enjoy if you like ... ;)

@adrianco hmm, i am not sure i understand your train of thought.

having written that: the "power" of contemporary gen ai solutions comes from their sheer size. and as we do not know yet how to modularize neural networks (almost no research yet, very hard topic), the only way of creating "smarter" llms is making them bigger - or create more topic-specialized llms. yet, they still are huge networks requiring huge amounts of training.

i started a new 5-part blog series discussing widespread software related misconceptions that often hurt us a lot in the process of software development.

the first post discusses the "assembly line fallacy", the misconception writing code would be the equivalent to assembling a car: https://www.ufried.com/blog/software_fallacies_1/

i just released a new blog post about history (sort of) repeating in IT and how we can use past developments to make more sense of current developments and to ponder on likely future developments - including the question if the most likely future is really where we want to go:

if llms are good at passing exams, it points out even more how pointless most exams are: they only urge people to cram arbitrary knowledge into their brains and regurgitate it on command. this is a pretty useless skill in times we can look up all knowledge of the world within seconds.

maybe we should use llms to introduce a new litmus test for exams: if a llm passes the exam, we take it as an indicator for the pointlessness of the exam.

in my new blog post "forget efficiency" i discuss why our omnipresent focus on improving efficiency is pointless unless we first focus on effectiveness - not only, but certainly regarding "developer productivity": https://www.ufried.com/blog/efficiency_vs_effectiveness/.

spoiler alert: software development is already extremely efficient but most of the time the software we create is waste by requirement, i.e., does not create any value.

Horror story in 7 words: "When will our digital transformation be done?"

🧛‍♀️👹🧟

ufried,
@ufried@mastodon.online avatar

@matthewskelton i have to admit i find such questions rather amusing as they prove the persons asking them have no idea what they are talking about. hence, i would rather file the question under "joke in 7 words" ... ;)

of course, if you are the person "hired to complete the digital transformation", such questions can quickly turn into terrifying horror stories ...

released the 6th part (of 7) of my blog series discussing the influence of modern ai solutions on the role of software engineers.

this time i discuss why we need to be a bit rebellious as software engineers to position ourselves better – and how the rise of ai solutions painfully points out some deficiencies and madness of the whole IT industry which goes way beyond the question how to position better as a software engineer.

the first post of my blog series discussing the role of software engineers in the face of modern ai solutions (https://www.ufried.com/blog/chatgpt_already_knows/) attracted more attention than i imagined. this made me revisiting the second post - and did not like it anymore. hence i rewrote it. 1/5
