Microsoft Teams' latest update now means that if a meeting is cancelled or time changed, which happens a lot for us, I now have to acknowledge it in Outlook AND clear the red notification bubble in teams for the change I've already dealt with.

This is strictly worse behavior. How did this get approved? What's the use case here?

Everyone complaining about slack, know this: I despise you and your blessed life.

@uncanny_kate@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Maybe I just need to somehow ignore the red dot for long enough for it to sync, if that's humanly possible.

Reminder if you need it: It's okay, no matter how senior you are, to ask for help. Even if you end up just rubber ducking someone, you can get through mental roadblocks by pairing up with others. Especially if you work remotely, I don't think many of us ask for this enough.

This is why I had a particularly crappy week. I don't work for the company in question, but they are a partner and integrated into our process. So a lot of emergencies trying to route around an incredibly long outage.

AI seems suddenly everywhere not because of a sea change, so much as we've retroactively started calling everything "AI”. Those google recommended answers to email? That's AI now. The default responses on my apple watch to texts? Sure, that's AI. Any context-dependent predictive text is AI now.

It isn't, it never was, but it's hot now and people are throwing money at it.

It's not a field of dreams like crypto, it's just the normal buzzword bingo game.

I predict that there are sufficient numbers of people who work better either in an office, or remotely, that companies that embrace one or the other will both thrive. This is a good thing! It's such a massive difference to people on either side of the divide, being able to choose is a big improvement for office worker types.

Right now in-office has way more opportunities, but a lot of that is inertia. As new remote-first companies mature, it’ll even out.

It is in fact a yay.

Yay!

Me a few days ago when it’s -14 degrees: “Wow, it’s freezing”

Me now when it’s 14 degrees: “Wow, it’s so much warmer. It’s feeling nice.”

@Tim_Eagon Yeah, but for real, it's so nice to be back to normal winter cold!

In the 80s, we had the rise of Personal Computers.
The 90s, the Internet.
The 00s, Mobile.

Big Tech sort of expected a world changing revolution on the regular.

The 10s had social media, which was at least something, but disappointing.

They desperately want to find the next thing. They think it's due.

Crytpo, VR/AR, AI, something life changing is due.

But in reality, it's not, and they'll keep getting more deranged until a new generation that understands incremental change takes over.

Siri: Okay, here's Thunderstruck by AC/DC

Me: ... well played.

I'm increasingly glad I ended up sticking with perl professionally. Yes, it's not popular. But I'm doing real work on real systems, with no crypto or AI nonsense anywhere in sight. And it's not super easy to hire perl experts these days, so the salaries have gone up. It was a tough decision with some false starts exploring options, but in the end sticking with the language I genuinely enjoy is paying off.

uncanny_kate,
@uncanny_kate@dice.camp avatar

@perigrin Yeah, and most of us (like me!) get locked into jobs where we're satisfied and it's very hard to dislodge us. Why would I take a risk and leave when my job doesn't suck and pays me well? The percentage of perl folk on the job market is lower than historical norms.

I see that the Sarah Connor Chronicles is streaming on Hulu. Way too many people slept on this when it aired, it's quite good! Lena Headey as Sarah Connor! It's a shame it didn't get a third season but it's still a fun ride.

One of the dumbest things to come out of the pandemic are safety or freshness seals on take out orders. Talk about security theater.

uncanny_kate,
@uncanny_kate@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I think it's because so many take-out orders are delivered by gig people (Doordash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, etc.) Once Five Guys started doing this, my fry count went from half of normal back to full - they absolutely were stealing half my fries on the regular.

I'm unhappy with the layoffs affecting WotC and Hasbro's leadership but found some of the online reactions strange. Then it clicked, this hadn't happened in about a decade (at least not at this scale), so what was once a regular occurrence during the 3e and 4e eras, is completely foreign to the vast majority of 5e players. How things change but also stay the same.

uncanny_kate,
@uncanny_kate@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Has it really been that long? Yeah, as someone who was active in those eras, I had a similar surprise at people's reaction, this is a known Hasbro thing to do. I also think people are madder at capitalism in general now (for very good reasons) than they used to be.

Over 25 years ago, I was at work and we had a process that would take 15-20 minutes to complete, so I pulled out a book and started to read while we waited. My coworker said, "Why are you reading fiction? It's such a waste of time. You could be reading a Java book or something, and at the end you'd have a new skill.”

I was so flabbergasted then I was at a loss for words. These many years later, I still am. It still bugs me. That's one of the worst opinions I've ever heard sincerely expressed.

It's fascinating to see that, after a decade of desperately trying to convince people there was no reason for perl to fall out of use (and there wasn’t), everyone conceded that it had happened and the fight was over.

And then suddenly, once it's no longer constantly under attack, people are now rediscovering it and being delighted by how good it is for solving real world problems.

It's not going away because it's actually the right tool for so many tasks.

It's so disheartening. I don't tend to have consumerism dreams, but I wanted a Tesla for years. I finally saved up and got one, and it exceeded my expectations in so many ways. And now, halfway through my loan, the whole thing has turned sour.

uncanny_kate, to random
@uncanny_kate@dice.camp avatar

I want to trade in my Tesla - it's just distressing to be even a little associated with Elon now - but I'm going to have to wait a year for all the new competing EVs to have a plug compatible with the charger already installed in my garage. I hope they dump Musk by then, but I doubt it.

Try not to judge Tesla drivers too harshly! As recently as 2021 it wasn't obvious Musk was worse than any other CEO, and a lot of us can't afford to just change cars on a short timeframe. It'll come.

I'm genuinely appalled and sickened by all the anti-Palestinian rhetoric I'm hearing these days. They are people. They deserve human rights. This is not the complex and nuanced part of the discussion.

    Well, I have a pretty good idea why my solar panels stopped working earlier this year. They weren't installed right and overheated badly enough to melt a significant portion of the roof.

    Guess who's getting a new roof, way ahead of schedule!

    I could sue the installers but would have to get in line in a bankruptcy situation with a lot of people, so, it's not even worth the lawyer fees most likely.

    Bummer of a Friday.

    @davethegame Yeah. Some level of venting is therapeutic but unlike Cheez-Its, it can't be the only thing you consume.
