I'm increasingly glad I ended up sticking with perl professionally. Yes, it's not popular. But I'm doing real work on real systems, with no crypto or AI nonsense anywhere in sight. And it's not super easy to hire perl experts these days, so the salaries have gone up. It was a tough decision with some false starts exploring options, but in the end sticking with the language I genuinely enjoy is paying off.

@uncanny_kate I’m not 100% convinced that people are trying to hire Perl experts. Jobs.perl is kinda … desolate.

@perigrin Yeah, and most of us (like me!) get locked into jobs where we're satisfied and it's very hard to dislodge us. Why would I take a risk and leave when my job doesn't suck and pays me well? The percentage of perl folk on the job market is lower than historical norms.

@uncanny_kate The unfortunate situation is if your job leaves you, you’ll struggle for a while. 2023 was a weird year.

@perigrin @uncanny_kate It’s just one ’s set of data points, but since 2005 I’ve never been out of work for more than two months

@mjgardner @uncanny_kate I’ve spent half of the last two decades self-employed. I’m not sure it’s fair to compare paths, but my experience has been qualitatively different this year.

@perigrin @uncanny_kate Everyone has a different path. IMHO the only ones for whom aggregate statistics apply are those whose are treated as an aggregate commodity by industry.

I evolved my strategy to avoid that. I neither present myself as nor take where I am an interchangeable commodity. Be an obviously different and more valuable cog that knows its worth to the machine.

@perigrin @uncanny_kate This goes further up the stack. A lot of are obvious commodity cogs in the machine. Bottom-feeders. Avoid them too, because they’ll just waste your time and energy winding you up to pursue here-today-gone-tomorrow .
