Ok, I have some time to dedicate to trying to untangle what's going on with Rust leadership/governance in the next few days

So, even though I've been avoiding Twitter, I'll be posting about it there (as well as here), since it's the de facto place where most announcements are made 🙃

@fasterthanlime The "no formal process of applying" thing seems to be a big problem for the Rust project. One of many ways in which things are just based on vibes, tradition, and personal relationships.

The recent governance RFC is so far from what's needed, it might be a first step but it's a tiny step coming so late that we've already had another crisis before it's even been implemented.

Anyhow, best of luck, hopefully you and some of the other people stepping up can help right the ship.

@fasterthanlime yeah, I'm aware that there's a lot in progress that's not public, I just hope that it goes a lot further than what simply implementing the recent governance RFC would do

Also a bit worried about the emphasis on moderation in the governance RFC, given that if you believe boats's account in the recent reddit thread, it sounds like there was an issue with trying to use moderation as a way to resolve unresolveable consensus issues

@Migueldeicaza inspired me to share my recipe for seared tuna recently, so here's a picture of my presentation for further inspiration. https://hachyderm.io/@unlambda/110375628533938738

First time making seared tuna, first google match for “seared tuna recipe”. It is unbelievably good:

A gift of the gods is an understatement

@Migueldeicaza yeah, seared tuna is delicious and surprising easy

@Migueldeicaza my recipe is a bit different than what you linked.

I add kosher salt and pepper to the tuna, sear in a heavy stainless steel pan with a little bit of neutral oil. Sear on both big sides, then briefly on the edges holding it with tongs to get them browned

Then I deglaze the pan with a sauce made from soy sauce, sake or Chinese rice wine, mirin, maple syrup, splash of rice vinegar, splash of toasted sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and scallion. Reduce until thickened.

I’ve only read a third of this but I know I would nod just as vigorously through the rest. This is huge. This would change everything.

Wait, something so long that Amos hasn't read the whole thing?

Anyone have the TL;DR on who the assholes big enough to make @nova burn out were so I can block them forever?

@dalias @nova I think this is where it came to a head: https://dotart.blog/dotart-blog/silencing-hachyderm

There's some discussion on the Nivenly Discord where some people bring up this earlier kind of awkward post from @nova which she later deleted and apologized for: https://weirder.earth/@kukkurovaca/109979609572132114

Today someone on Linkein posted how fascinated he was that speak many languages. Most of us just take that for granted, we have a pretty low regard of ourselves etc, so it's a good reminder that does have good stuff going for it.

PS: I speak English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Hokkien. I'm considered "average" in terms of linguistic ability. There are kopitiams uncles and aunties who speak 6-8 languages/dialects!

unlambda,
@unlambda@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai Yeah, as an average American, I speak one language. I've worked on some others, but never gotten to the point of fluency.

And the code switching from Malaysians is also really impressive; just the way they switch between English and Malay mid sentence is quite something to watch.
