The funny thing about this is that I've seen plenty of connectors that look even worse!

@recursive

Four times that!

For a fancy USB 3.1 connector.

@zl2tod

Yep — 10 Gb/s USB 3.0 - https://www.digikey.ca/en/product-highlight/l/lemo/high-speed-data-transfer-usb-3-1-connectors

These sorts of connectors are almost impossible to connect to wires without a million dollar metrology lab.

The long screws have arrived!

ve7fim,
@ve7fim@mastodon.social avatar

@f4grx

Wait until you see what I'm doing with them. :)

The long screws are for a rack-mount annunciator that I've been building.

I used multiple stacked PCBs to hold the diffusors in place and to provide proper spacing for the LEDs, so I need long screws to hold everything together.

Here's a close-up view of how all the PCB layers are held together:

@schrockwell

Exactly! And the second PCB is aluminium. :)

The spacers are good candidates for 3D printing, but my "CAD" skills are mostly from back when you did drafting on a drafting table.

I never did successfully make the transition to AutoCad, though I did have lots of fun programming with Constructive Solid Geometry back in the QuickDraw 3D days.

@schrockwell

I really don't like subscription software models, and I'd have to buy a whole new computer just to be able to run it, so that's why I've avoided it... (last time I looked was when I needed a tool to do some sheet metal designs, but I ended up just drawing things out by hand and sent it off to the prototyping shop for them to convert into solidworks files.). Other than that, it looks like a very good piece of software.

I'd prefer something like openscad, but a little more mature.

The full dev environment for this project is set up and running again, and I'm able to build and install firmware updates.

That means that tomorrow I can work on adding in new code to allow each of the annunciator indicators to be individually controlled via SNON.

I've already written a VITA 40 library, so it should be pretty quick.

Software is done. Just need to do a little bit more clean-up of the code before I check it in.

Easing myself back into doing PCBs... Here's a small update to an almost-finished design that brings this up to version 1.0, and once manufactured and tested, I will be able to close this board off as complete.

Good old HPE, literally putting sheet metal in front of the HDMI connector so that you have to buy their iLO licenses. Sigh.

Ugh. A company got a trademark on the phrase:

@ve7fim@mastodon.social avatar

Yay! I just got a really great deal on a bunch of these, for around $0.15 each. This will be very useful for mounting LED bargraphs.

@vxo

TIL311s and the similar HP ones are lovely little displays!

I usually don't use sockets like these, and instead make PCBs for the front panel displays, but these are so old school, I just had to grab some.

@mos_8502

Me too! And they have plenty of unusual uses, too. :)

JLCPCB sent me a sample of their upcoming full-color silkscreen service and the quality is really impressive!

@arturo182 I've seen a bunch of samples with this process, and it is very impressive.

If you're interested in more details, there's a link to the WeChat discussion group at the bottom of the EasyEDA page describing how to use color silkscreen: https://prodocs.easyeda.com/cn/pcb/other-draw-colorful-silkscreen/index.html

Was there just an earthquake?

Edit: Nothing showing up on USGS. That sure was a weird rolling motion, though.

ve7fim,
@ve7fim@mastodon.social avatar

There was an earthquake!

It showed up on the local seismograph:

ve7fim,
@ve7fim@mastodon.social avatar

Woah, that is pretty big for this area:

ve7fim,
@ve7fim@mastodon.social avatar

It's showing up on USGS now as a 4.6. Pretty deep. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ljrn/dyfi/intensity

ve7fim,
@ve7fim@mastodon.social avatar

Canada's system now says it was a 4.9: https://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/recent/2023/20231217.2323/index-en.php

"Felt on northern and central Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and many parts of greater Vancouver."
