@vincent Does bird.makeup support authorized fetch / secure mode? If not, are there any plans to support it?

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#authorized_fetch

The reason I’m asking: I’m trying to follow some bird.makeup accounts from a Calckey instance. I can view their profiles just fine (the instance is not blocked) but trying to follow an account results in a “pending” state forever.

I was told that this is because, unlike Mastodon, Calckey requires authorized fetch in order to follow an account - the same issue as this: https://codeberg.org/calckey/calckey/issues/10002

vincent,

@smallsco an instance checker is a good idea! Won’t be 100% accurate for blocks though, since I don’t see if the instance is blocked, only that it has 0 followers from there.

Detecting if it’s not blocked will work great though

vincent,

@smallsco it’s something I want to add yes. I haven’t found yet good docs on the specs of that though. Hope I won’t have to reverse engineer that from mastodon/calckey

My little brother just produced a new song and it’s quite a banger!

(It’s in french though)

So I'm officially starting work to port bird.makeup to other social networks, starting with Instagram. There is some code already written, and the domain is already bought: kilogram.makeup

It will be very bare bone at first, and there will be a list of supported accounts, but as I make it scale those limits will be removed. I also plan to add features that will specifically help , like federating stories.

vincent,

On a more technical note: shoutout to https://github.com/instaloader/instaloader that will give me all the data I will need to make this work.

Also currently federation bird.makeup <> Pixelfed is imperfect. Posts and accounts can be found but followed posts don't show up in the timeline. I believe there might something with the activity ( https://bird.makeup/users/dog_rates/statuses/1650533062655242252/activity ) If a pixelfed expert could chime in here it will be very helpful to this project!

vincent,

@makkhorn Nope! That only helps the fediverse

vincent,

@fishcharlie @Mastodon Yes to work on mastodon too! That’s what I’ll be mainly using myself

It’s unfortunately not a given that ActivityPub makes everything work out of the box though, there are subtle things that create incompatibilities in practice.

vincent,

@radu this feature is more important to me than being easy to install. Also you are welcome to host a mirror on GitHub if you want

Looks like federation Pixelfed <> bird.makeup is starting to work now. I can get my @dog_rates there too!

Also shoutout to the Vernissage app ( https://github.com/VernissageApp/Vernissage ). It's a great pixelfed client for iOS

Looks like Lemmy "sub-reddit" are activitypub groups and thus can be followed: @technology

Interesting!

vincent,

@Ephera Yeah I noticed! Just wanted to link to it, is there a way to remove the post from the community?

So one of bird.makeup server was down today and I just fixed it. It's probably going to be time soon to replace it with something beefier on OVH as we approach 30k users.

A bit thanks to all the supporters of this project that will make this switch possible! 🤗

vincent,

It's probably going to be time load balance the main web server between more than one server soon too, we are getting often rate limited from twitter on that one. That's why there are often errors when loading tweets from the web UI

New little feature on bird.makeup this weekend: the account page will now display the number of followers a user has, and also in which server that account is the most popular.

Hope this will help users find more niche servers that host the communities they want to be part of! Also if you are on a server like mastodon.social that bans bird.makeup and you want to move, this is now my recommended way to find a new home

Looks like all the time I spent this week optimising bird.makeup was useful: we managed to hit the performance target of processing every account at least once every hour.

3749 twitter accounts followed by 1985 fediverse users, and with so much space to grow now!

Proud to introduce my new activitypub project: https://bird.makeup . Do you wish to follow on mastodon some people that are still on the bird site? Now you can! You can even follow the muskrat if you want @elonmusk (but why would you?)
