Do any of you know of a package that lets me use slack / mastodon style emoji insertion?

Between Mastodon & Rocket (awesome macOS app) I keep starting to type : foo : instead of going to M-x insert-char

Obviously we can't just use : foo : because programming languages use colons all the time, but surely there's something similar we can do like !: foo :! or whatever.

🤔 I can't remember a language that combines colons and bangs.

@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@masukomi there's an input method to do exactly this. Suggest to take a look at the completion candidates offered by C-h I (capital i).

I'm so used to isearch, I got surprised by vim's / not behaving like it (not like it can thanks to vim's normal mode keybindings but hey, what can I say).

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@yeti I have set it to follow system language (which is English) so if my app doesn't follow it, there's nothing much I can do.

(It is not the end of the day if the languages are off-sync. And what language I am to set if I type in Tamil but using Latin characters?)

You save everything to ~/Desktop, I save it to ~/Documents/Desktop Stuff 3. We are not the same.

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@yeti @spnw the nice thing about mirroring / in your home directory is that you can install software and libraries in your home directory with the least hassle given you have the relevant environment variables set. I was heavily invested in such a system until I got tired of the nesting I did for my personal files so gave it all up.

(I went as far as patching software to follow my scheme since I was using Alpine+CRUX's package manager, and later just CRUX.)

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@yeti @spnw definitely. Right now, installing to /usr/local/ works but it feels unclean even though Debian leaves it to the user clearly for these purposes.

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@yeti @spnw considering how CRUX maintainers are numbered, I'm not surprised by the lack of architecture support. I wonder if Alpine fairs better since you can easily play with core posts of it. If I'm not wrong, I replaced OpenRC with another init system without hassle.

To all those users who use sendmail to send out messages via message.el:

If you're using msmtp, you can either set message-sendmail-f-is-evil to t and add "--read-envelope-from" to message-sendmail-extra-arguments.
Or you can set mail-envelope-from to the symbol header. I do the latter and I no longer have unexplainable-From-address-changing issues (the latest one was when I sent a Gnus' draft message).

This one was a real PITA to figure out (the amount of nesting function calls to send a mail is... incredible).

emacs dumb question: i often loose focus on mini-buffer and ctrl-g doesn't end last funtion. Is there a "move focus to minibuffer" thingy?

I wish English had respectful pronouns. I feel guilty when I refer people I truly respect and/or look up to as just "you."

This is rather ironic because I say to my juniors all the time to "call me however you like, keep the respect in your heart" yet I cannot pull this off.

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@yeti Well, you will be forced to refer to them respectfully when they are present but on the flip side, you can talk shit about without nasty words just by referring to the person without the respectful pronouns. This happens all the time with me when I talk in not-English.

Bottom line: personally, I don't see a huge problem with using the respectful pronouns with people I don't respect.

Is The Picture of Dorian Gray a very eloborate way to say the three words, "I love you?" I'm almost through the first chapter and I can't help but think Oscar Wilde is being extremely gay and is thoroughly trolling me (which I am all up for).

Bur my God are the preface and the first few paragraphs so beautifully written...

Thanks to the pdf-tools package, which I discovered this week, Emacs is now my perfect PDF reader.

  • Semantic outline
  • Annotation management and so much more.

Emacs Org Clock Agenda Daytime Mode now has its own article: https://www.draketo.de/software/emacs-daytime

I did not want to use the github link in the package.

A simple mode which shows the clocked time today in the modeline. It uses the time clocked in org-agenda-files. The main goal is to always see how much I already worked, so I see more easily whether it is time to stop.

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@ArneBab The convention is use to -- for internal variables and functions. But whatever you show seem to be user options, this is confusing, can you not change it so that the package obeys the proper convention?

Is there any progress on ?

@dekkzz76 @mms is it nice on the battery? Last time I tried it was notorious for draining my battery really quick.

Would anyone know how to teach when I mark a region (by pressing S-arrow left) to stop at a more sensible position? As seen in the screenshot I had my point before the closing parens on the second line, pressed S-arrow left and would expect it to stop before the next parens, not including <"unknown"))>?

viz, (edited )
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@louis AFAIU shift-selection, it moves the same amount the unshifted-key moves. Does left also move the same?

Why must there be stray dogs? Can't they all be cats instead 😔

viz, (edited )
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@holgerschurig I know a simple substitution will mess up the local ecology but a man can dream right?

The stray dogs here are unpleasant: they bark at everyone so you end up feeling like a criminal in your own street, they decide to have a gang fight at ungodly hours when you're trying to sleep, they fuck like rabbits and the puppies become yet another source of trouble.

Bad NEWS,

With a heavy heart, I want to share some thoughts about a recent
development with Emacs that I found really disappointing :(

https://eshelyaron.com/posts/2023-12-10-bad-news.html

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@louis @eshel @bthalpin @offset___cyan @ericsfraga the maintainers are hearing both sides of the argument and trying to come with a compromise since Theirry's patch fixes other issues with the register system too. The maintainers need more time, this article is just someone being overly dramatic and not patient.

I now have 11 apps installed on my iPhone just for the purpose of authentication with ebanking systems, authorizing credit card and debit card transations and scanning payment slips, since every bank and credit card provider runs their own apps. Each has to be registered in their system and often includes the Hardware ID of the device.

Then there is Apple Pay. Having credit cards registered with Apple Pay means you have to run through some (provider-specific) process for every card + for every iDevice, sometimes with personal authentication on the phone, chat or text messages.

Replacing phones (which I did two weeks ago) becomes very difficult. It involves hours of work and phone calls with support call centers.

I think that is not how it was supposed to be. Technology should make life easier, not endlessly more complex.

viz,
@viz@emacs.ch avatar

@louis Do you not have a common protocol/system to do payments? We have a centralised protocol called UPI that is bank agnostic and app agnostic. It is really convenient and boosted the adoption of cashless transactions to a huge level in a matter of two years.
